Which Bullet Weight For .308win?

Last night while trying to buy ammo on the Freedom Munitions sight I realized I didn't know crap about .308win rifle ammo. I assume different levels of accuracy will result from bullet weights and barrel lengths and rifling twist rates. I'm just looking for function and reliability not really match grade accuracy.
This ammo is for paper punching with the M1A and DPMS Recon GII.

They were out of the general purpose $0.51 per round ammo. I ended up ordering some .308win 150gr SPBT Reman @ $0.65 per round.

What are you using for target practice?

30 Cal ammo is for hunting and if you can hit it, you can kill it. The more pricey ammo is for guys that like talking more about hunting then actual hunting.

For target practice, use a 22LR.

I recently purchased some FM 308 A-Max 155gr and 168gr. I've only used the 155gr so far and it's excellent target ammo. I was very impressed with the consistency of each round. I was shooting at 100yds and the 3 shot groups were touching each other. I don't think I've ever done that with the Remington 150gr core-lokt or Winchester X 150gr that I normally shoot for target practice. The FM ammo was also cheaper than the Remington and Winchester ammo.

FMs new 150 grain FMJ all day everyday. M1 and Ruger M77 love it. It has been out of stock for about 2+ weeks now that I have noticed.
Have never tried their .308 Reman. Always gone before I get there.

Yeah, I think that 150gr FMJ ammo has been "Out Of Stock" since before I bought the M1A, I was trying to buy some ammo before I got the rifle. If that's the ammo listed at 0.51 cents per round? Don't want to spend 0.80 - 1.00 per round if the less expensive works good for paper target.

I have Not used the .51 150GR FMJ Reman. Just the .677 150GR FMJ New with no problems. If are wanting to try it out and don't want to wait for them to get back in stock, who knows how long that will be, I am more than willing to UPS you a few boxes to try it out.

Thanks for the generous offer, but that Ok. I ordered 100 rounds of the 0.65 per round stuff to try out plus last month I had bought 60 rounds at Cabelas. I don't remember what brand it was. I should have enough to function test both rifles.
Next time I order I may just buy the New stuff.

It's a bolt action right? So it will pretty much function with anything in .308 correct? Do you use the 168 in a AR10 or M1A.

as I type this I am looking over at the 308 ammo stash, I have a savage tactical 308 bolt gun that will shoot anything, I have some 168gr federal match grade with the sierra bullets and they are the most accurate, but I only shoot it in competition. when there is money involved

I have a case of federal 150gr power point, soft nose and it is plenty good for target and hunting, while it want shoot with the federal match it is still less than MOA out of the long heavy barrel

I also have about 300 rds. of 160 gr ultramax reman, in a bthp, using lake city brass, this has been an accurate round as well and I use it in both the savage as well as my M1A squad scout,

I have one box of 180 gr Remington core lock left from an elk hunt which is way to heavy for the operating rod of the M1A , but would be find in a good bolt gun

so I guess while I am being long winded, stay with a 147-160 gr in the M1A due to operating rod, and I while I have no experience with the ar10 dpms, I would keep it in the same area of bullet weight as the M1A

if you are just punching holes in paper then why spend a bunch of money on target grade match ammo.
