Letter From Underwood Ammo
Letter from Underwood Ammo:
Does your loads meet SAAMI specs?
I have 8 Kimber 1911s and (2) Sig P226s and a P229. Calibers range from .45, .40, .357Sig, and 9mm . Would like to carry all.
Darrell
As long as there is a SAAMI spec for the given caliber, we will load to maximum SAAMI specs. I.E - Our 9mm standard pressure and +P loads are SAAMI spec, but there is no SAAMI spec for 9mm +P+ so we have our own standard for that.
But in short, all of our 45ACP standard and +P, 10mm, .40SW, 9mm standard and +P, .357SIG, .380 standard are within SAAMI specs!

Um, do you really need your bullets going 10,000 feet per second? (just exaggerating for discussion sake.)

I really need to go with something less penetrating since I live in a condo surrounded by nothing but drywall and wood...

Until I know of something better I will stay with Speer GDHP in 124 gr. +P in 9mm or 230 gr. in .45. At my last employer, we killed lots of guys with that without exit wounds and over penetration. We wen to GDHP from Hydrashock in 1993 or 4

Wow, impressive. I'm assuming then that you were 'employed' by the U.S. Government and served overseas?
During my time in the Land of Bad Things, we were (unfortunately) only allowed to carry 230gr FMJ in our .45's. Looks like things have changed for the better. Bad guys deserve good ammo!

Note: SAAMI is "not to exceed," so even a light load is in accordance with SAAMI spec.
Also, there is not a single pressure specification, but rather three and they are all statistical--Maximum Average pressure, Maximum Probably Lot Mean pressure, Maximum Probably Sample Mean pressure, and Maximum Extreme Variation.
So, 9x19 is 35000 MAP, 36100 MPLM, and 37800 MPSM, while 9x19 +P is 38500 MAP, 39700 MPLM, and 41500 MPSM. So, as long as the ammunition is below these pressures, it meets SAAMI. Most only quote MAP. So, don't think that every round is under 35ksi pressure. It takes a LOT of rounds to get the required statistics, and that isn't cheap.
