Pre rush prices?

So I just got back into shooting in February. Most of my stuff is new or was collecting dust for many years. Back in the mid 90's I had a Ruger 10/22. I don't remember what ammo prices were back then. Couldn't have been much as I was pretty poor back then.

Unfortunately most of my guns were stolen in 1997. Most were recovered in 1999. All had seen better days by the time the police returned them to me. I ended up selling the lot of them to a gun shop. Wish now I hadn't even though they were far from pristine.

Anyway, back to my point. Pre rush ammo costs. What did .22 LR run before the rush? I just bought my son a 10/22 for his birthday. I was hoping to go to the range with him on Saturday to try it out only to find I can't find ammo for it! Well, thats not completely true. I did buy 1000 rounds off of Gun Broker. I was just shocked at the price. $109 for 1000 of .22 LR? is this normal?

Seems all my other ammo is about the same price. $180 for 500 .45ACP, $165 for 500 9mm, $135 for 500 .380. Heck I know shotgun slug prices are way up. Paid $15 a box for them last week. They used to be around $5. So whats the old normal?

Mmmm, well 1,000 rounds of .22 for $109 is right at 0.11 cents per round.
Twenty bucks for a 500 round brick (0.04) per round was pretty common online.
Sadly if you need ammo now your going to $$$$ pay for it.

When I was a youngster, I'd hop on my Gitane and ride to the gun store when the price was $4.99 for a box of 500 rounds. If I had the cash for two boxes, it was hard to ride home.

Think they were 3.99 way back when dad bought my remington nylon 66. Buttstock feed rod never failed me.

It's all a matter of supply and demand, the corona virus has slowed the manufactures down and the rioting has driven the demand up.

Think back to the last ammo shortage we went through 4 or 5 years ago when reloads were going for .50 a round. There was a lesson to be learned there and I'd like to think I learned it.

Agree, what Chuck said! In real life, with only one or two caliber exceptions (.38spl/.357mag) I probably should not need to buy any more ammo...BUT I WILL when the supply comes up and price goes down.
I made some purchases just under the covid lockdown wire, back Jan./Feb.

5k round cases of CCI Standard Velocity was $250 at SGAmmo pre-panic. It's now showing $340 but is out of stock. Cheap high velocity 500rd bulk pack sold at big box stores for $16-$20 pre-panic.

I had grabbed several boxes of CCI .22LR mini-mags locally the other day because supplies are so scarce. That particular ammo was not available at the online outlets I checked. One of my local shops did have some but was limiting sales to 2 boxes per visit. I hate to say it but I went back later in the day and picked up another 2 boxes. What I hate to say more is that they have it tagged at $12.99 a box

A couple weeks ago I found an old brick (500 rounds) of Thunderbolt hidden in my workshop. I bought it back around '94 or '95. Price tag from K-Mart was still on it..$1.99.
