700x and 45acp

I came into a bit of 700x powder. I have used for 9mm when I could not get my treasured and now discontinued W231; but never for 45acp.

Have any of you used 700x for 45 and if so what recipes?

I have read it is accurate but hard to meter.

I heard that when powder was scarce and it was all to be found. But I measured load after load case by case on my Dillon but didn't see too much of an issue. Plus or minus a tenth. Not enough to matter for these loads. But I heard to keep the hopper above half all the time and agitate it when filling. I guess the weight load on it helps.

Also read guys would tape an electric tooth brush on the hopper. I am not that anal about the loads.

I used it primarily for .38 SPL plinking loads. I believe it was originally designed for shotguns. Considering its flexibility for low pressure applications, I'd find an older Speer Number 9 reloading manual, and see if a plinker .45 ACP load is delineated there.

You got lucky!

Gee, I thought I sold my copy!

I went downstairs and found I still had my Speer Number 9 reloading manual. Only one load for 700X is listed.

Warning!!! It is for lead bullet of 200 to 225 grains!!!

Wink 700-X recipes

While I have never loaded with 700-X, I have fired a bunch of target range reloads that used it (.38 Spl). It has a burn rate falling somewhere between Alliant powders Bullseye and Unique. However, I will have to say that it is the filthiest powder that I have ever shot. Lots of smoke, lots of soot and residue!I It is accurate and economical, so it kind of rides the fence. It has good points and bad points. It is at it's best in cast bullet target type loads.

Here are a few recipes out of the Lyman 49th Edition Reloading Manual:

185 Remington Jacketed SWC/FMJ IMR 700-X 3.4 675 fps
Remarks: sugg. start load; 1.135" OAL; 7,900 cup

185 Remington Jacketed SWC/FMJ IMR 700-X 5.0 967 fps
Remarks: max load; 1.135" OAL; 17,800 cup

185 Hornady Jacketed HP/XTP IMR 700-X 3.5 612 fps
Remarks: sugg. start load; 1.175" OAL; 7,500 cup

185 Hornady Jacketed HP/XTP IMR 700-X 5.5 933 fps
Remarks: max load; 1.175" OAL; 17,800 cup

200 Speer Gold Dot Jacketed HP IMR 700-X 3.3 597 fps
Remarks: sugg. start load; 1.178" OAL; 7,400 cup

200 Speer Gold Dot Jacketed HP IMR 700-X 4.9 871 fps
Remarks: max load; 1.178" OAL; 17,300 cup

225 Speer Jacketed HP IMR 700-X 3.1 549 fps
Remarks: sugg. start load; 1.243" OAL; 7,500 cup

225 Speer Jacketed HP IMR 700-X 4.8 796
Remarks: max load; 1.243" OAL; 17,200 cup

230 Speer TMJ IMR 700-X 3.6 667 fps
Remarks: sugg. start load; 1.275" OAL; 11,200 cup

230 Speer TMJ IMR 700-X 4.8 867 fps
Remarks: max load; 1.275" OAL; 17,900 cup; potentially most accurate load
I was never a real fan of 700-X. I shot range loads of it before I started reloading. I never bought any of it. Just too damn dirty for me!!

Hope this helps.
