Kimber Takedown Widget

That clever little chunk of plastic from NDZ Performance really caught my eye. The bent paper clip that Kimber supplies is really silly in comparison. Instead of my brain telling me, "You gotta buy one," it told me, "You gotta make one."

After considering the project, it seemed that it might take a few tries before I get one that I like. I looked over the guide rod, took some measurements, scribbled a picture on a sheet of paper,, and picked out a suitable chunk of aluminum. I chose aluminum because it would be a suitable material for the finished widget and I like working with aluminum, but I also picked out a chunk of Delrin in case I choose to work out the bugs and make a second one.

The bore of the widget came out fine, and the outside diameter was greater than the inside diameter, which is always nice. The slot wasn't as nice as intended, but this was the prototype, so no biggie. When the widget was finished, it wouldn't quite fit under the dust cover, so I had to take a file and add a little more taper on one side.

The widget works fine, and the slide can be lined up with the slide stop with no pressure on the spring. It turns out that the length of the tool isn't all that critical. The whole project took just over an hour.

While this tool will suit my needs, one made of Delrin will be a little nicer. I might change the overall length, and I'll definitely change the angle and location of the taper.

Nice work Rob, what took you so long? I was expecting stuff like this from you around the time you made your 200th post.

Well I didn't have a Kimber that required special tools until about the 900th post. Honestly, special tools aren't really needed, but little gadgets are fun.

Yes they are especially if you have a lathe in the workshop along with a milling machine. I'm jealous!

I could have soooo used one of those last night. Trying to get that new UCT apart was a pain in the a.. with that little paper clip thing. That thing is ridiculous!! What was Kimber thinking with that thing?
Can't wait to see the next version!

That is one sweet widget, Rusty. That little tool from NDZ caught my eye as well. I hope you believe imitation is the sincerest form of flattery...I have a machinist friend at Delta who happens to like guns and loves to tinker a bit too...we'd talked about doing the same kind of thing...
