Slide stop lever

Just purchased my first Kimber and it's also my first 1911. It's the covert ultra ll. I was able to break it down very easily but I'm now having an issue installing the slide stop lever. I've got everything lined up with the half moon notch on the slide but can't get it to snap in. Am I missing something or what. Pushing very hard afraid I might damage it. Like I said, first 1911. Any help or advice would be great. Thanks.

You might be hanging up on a spring loaded plunger that must be depressed in order to get the slide stop into place. Look closely at the gun until you see what I'm talking about.

You CAN push downward on the stop while rotating it upward, thus pushing the plunger back into it's bore. The risk is that you might spaz out and put a scratch onto your frame. Another way is to use your chopstick to push the plunger in, while pushing downward on the stop.

Once you look it over, you'll figure it out.

Notice that the leading edge of the catch on the slide stop is beveled a bit.

Once you are sure you have the shaft of the slide stop inserted properly through the barrel link (loop with hole in it on the barrel) then position the half moon to its proper position, carefully move the slide stop to just barely under the plunger (but NOT touching frame), then press slightly up and in on the slide stop. The beveled edge should help get you past the plunger and it will fall into the hole. Good luck.

As RustyIron said you're probably hanging up on the slide stop plunger. Until the parts get some use and loosen up and you get the hang of it you'll probably struggle with it. First put some tape on the frame so if you slip you don't scratch it then try again. Here's a picture of the slide stop and plunger you have to overcome. If you have a 3rd hand handy you can depress the plunger with small screwdriver while you push the slide stop in. Eventually you'll learn to do it without even thinking about it.

Thank you all for your responses. I'm sure I'll figure it out. Actually found a tool from NDZ Performance that should help.

Good news... followed all your advice and got it to go in on the first try. Did leave a little ding on the frame but I can live with that. Thanks again for all the help.

Like I posted earlier some tape on the frame will help keep that from happening.

You might want to try this tool. It's very easy to scratch your 1911 especially when your new to it. I don't if you've heard this before but when you scratch the frame inserting the slide stop it's called an "Idiot Scratch" Many of us have scratched our frames and this will help you get used to installing your slide stop and not scratch the frame.
