Raptor II 9mm issue - Help!

New guy on the forum but been shooting a 1911 for 46 years plus - Army trained armorer and specialized in the 1911 way back when.

Kimber issue: This brand new Raptor 5" full size in 9mm is giving me a headache - FTE's which causes a Type 3 malfunction. Using Rem and Win factory ball both in 115 and 124 gr bullets. This gun has a 700 round brake-in period. Also cleaned/lubed after each 100 rds.

Sofar - I dealt with the extractor being the issue and re-tuned another factory sent extractor - this time I put less tension on it and still encountered the same problem - almost seems like a timing issue - maybe to slow/fast. Also went to Tripp Corba magazines along with factory.

Anyone else have a similar problem. The Kimber 45's run without a glitch - first 1911 in 9mm and have another ordered. Did I make a mistake?????????

Ready to send it back but a 6 week turn don't cut it. Any suggestion would be appreciated.

Hi Jerry, welcome to KT. I have a 5” 9mm stainless raptor that has been thru the exact same issues as you are describing. I have adjusted the factory extractor 4 times total, it was way too loose from the factory, and shot around 500 before it settled in. It now is just as smooth as expected. I also have the Pro and Ultra sized 9mm Raptors. The ultra was perfect out of the box. The pro needed an (1) extra for adjustment and has been perfect ever since. I do think it also has to do with the timing. Keep working with it, keep shooting it and break the springs in and it will settle in.

Mini Me thanks for the reply! Shot another 150 rds this am with 5 failures - the factory extractor was super tight - the one they sent me I gave about half with a little play - same problem! I have on order a Wilson Combat and Ed Brown extractors with a few different springs. I have a Pro coming - these will not be carry guns but I will use then for Defensive type handgun training only - getting away from the 45 - my elbow can't take it - old age not for the weak and I will never stop training.

Forgot to mention ramp and chamber was polished which was the first thing done.

Jerry, let me know what you find out with the new extractors and springs you have on order. I don’t EDC my Raptors either but with how the 5” 9 ran out of the box it would take a long time and a lot of flawless sessions for me to be comfortable with it.
Side note, what year is your Mustang in your avatar pic? It’s hard for me to see on my phone but I would guess ‘67 or 68?

1965 with a 289 had a 4 speed but went with a C4 a few years back.

Back on Kimber - I think the milled extractor will work better then the factory molded type....just taking a shot!

Thank you! Been a Kimber fan since 1995/98 they beat a Colt GC out of the box in those days - think they have gone down somewhat since then - to many production models etc. They wanted me to work for them in NY at the custom shop but I had just retired and was not interested.

Going to shoot again in the AM and will try some 147 gr. a little hot...

Update! Fired 200(Rem 115 & Win 124) rounds with 7 failures (extract/eject) causing a type 3 malfunction. In addition to the 200 I fired some (30) Win 147gr SXT without glitch.

So, I clean her all up and look at recoil springs - Raptor is a 12lb (???) spring with a length of 6 1/4 inches - The (new) Wolf spring is 6 1/2 inches - Maybe Kimber put the wrong spring in the gun....Will find out Tuesday first thing.

Merry Christmas everyone!!!

Interesting the 147's had no problems, might be a hint there but you didn't shoot a lot of them either.
