slide stop on UC II won't let go

I wondering if it's supposed to do this or if it is a malfunction: the slide locks open on an empty mag, but I can't get the darn thing to disengage unless I remove the mag, then it works fine. Not only will the catch not budge with a mag inserted, but I can't rack the slide either. It won't move. Is that normal?

Thanks for any info on this. This is my first Kimber, but not my first semiauto, and none of them have done this.

Pull back on the slide and lower the slide release simultaneously.

You need to remove the empty mag. New Kimber's are often pretty stiff with new unloaded mags.

I would suggest (as your Kimber manual states) to not drop the slide on an empty magazine.

The follower on the empty mag is what pushes up on the slide lock. That is why it locks open after the last round.

Welcome to the forum from northern Illinois hydro333, it sounds like your gun is working properly. As others have explained the empty magazine is designed to lock the slide open, drop the magazine and you can release the slide.

How about stopping by our "New Member Introduction" sub forum and introduce yourself to the membership.

The same thing happens to my Compact when I use the Wilson Combat magazines. No way to drop the slide back to position with the empty magazine in.

Can't speak for the OP, but I know I learned something new. I really hadn't thought about it, just thought it's a new gun that's going to be stiff for a little bit. It all makes sense now.

BTW, if you have the slide locked back, magazine out, and you are trying to wipe off something in the receiver *** Watch Out***, you can bump the little nubby thing that the follower pushes up on and it may release the slide. A 22# recoil spring makes that slide snap closed pretty quickly. If your finger is in the way .....

Don't ask me how I know.

Whaaaat? You can't close the slide on an unloaded gun without first removing the magazine? It seems absurd that you have to drop the magazine before you can close the slide. If that's the way all Ultra Carrys function, I'd consider it more of a design flaw.

This thread is helpful. I was feeling like an Ultra CDP II might be in my future. Now I'd have to REALLY check one out closely to make sure I experience the "stuck slide stop" or any other "bonus features" that I might not be aware of.

Seriously, is this documented in the users manual, or is it the position of Kimber that the slide stop can't be moved with an empty magazine?
