Mag drops after firing first round.

My wife has a brand new Kimber Stainless Target II in 9mm. She exclusively uses Wilson Combat ETM (10 round) magazines.

When inserting a new mag, after the first shot is fired the magazine seems to slip down a bit, preventing recycling. She performs a "tap and rack" and keeps going.

This seems to happen to every magazine she inserts into the firearm.

I have asked her over and over again "are you sure you are inserting the magazine aggressively enough into the firearm in the first instance" and she assures me that she is.

Any thoughts?

Have her insert it with the slide open. Once it clicks into place, it shouldn't move after that. Also see if it happens when a less than full magazine is inserted. It sounds like a full mag is making it difficult to fully insert it.

Wink My 2 Cents Worth!!

Have the Mrs. insert the mag with the slide locked back and then pull the slide back, then release, to "slingshot" the slide into battery. That should make for a positive mag insertion and lock up. If that doesn't work, then you definitely have a problem and you need to contact Kimber!!!

If the slingshot method does not work, I have one more suggestion before sending the pistol back to Kimber. You will need to invest in a tool that we in the States (mostly telephone linemen) refer as "BIG BOO", the all-American fine adjustment tool or a BFH !!!

A 2 1/2 pound lineman's hammer!! I will cure the problem or kill it, once and for all!!!

Actually, I'd stick with the slingshot method and contacting Kimber. Even if Big Boo would be more fun!!!

That looks like a "#7 Precision Alignment Tool."

Also, remove and clean the mag release, as well as the area of the frame where the mag release is inserted. Lube lightly and reinstall. At least you'll know the release is not hanging up.

You didn't mention if you had tried shooting the gun yourself, one way to determine whether it's the gun, magazine or something your wife is doing would be to see if it happens to you.

What about the factory mags. Do they work fine? If so then look where the mag meets the mag catch on the Wilson mags.

Thanks for the comments team. I now have a few things to try when we next head to the range.
