280AI Problmes

Hey guys i bought a new Kimber Hunter in 280AI. First i am a EXPERT Handloader.Former Bench rest shooter i know all the tricks. So i loaded up a few mild loads and head to the range to do some barrel break in. shoot n clean sight in. I noticed a ring on the brass about the .500 mark on the case and the bolt seemed a little stickey. Very mild load. 162 at 2,800 FPS. so definitely a ring scratch on the brass about .500 up from the head and its a scratch and not a stretch mark. So the rifle shot well. So i head to 200 yards. load some more and up the powder and still a scratch and heavy bolt lift and difficult extraction at 2,900 fps with a 162. but it shot well so i decided to try to polish the scratch but it is deep,I removed the scope and i can see the scratch or mark in the chamber with my eyes,so that is not good. So i think its junk and needs rebarreled. There is no way that can be repaired other than a new chamber. Right ?

Arland it stands for Ackley Improved.

Ackley Improved (designated AI) rifle cartridges are commercially available cartridges that are "improved" by firing in the AI chamber. The AI version has less case body taper and a sharper (usually 40 degree) shoulder, giving the cartdrige case more powder capacity, thus improving it's performance.

The Term "Ackley Improved" means that the cartridge was documented as being originally altered to the improved version by Parker Oliver Ackley.

Well i called customer service and it is going back. Although the conversation with customer service did not sound too promising they agreed to take a look at it and repair it if they felt is was not ok. Well i own several older 8400's and one in a 270 win that i feel was the best sporting rifle ever made in the USA. I do understand the Hunter is a base line rifle but it should not have a bad chamber from the factory. So i guess we send it back and see what happens.

That's good Frank, from your account it sounds like repair or replace will be needed.

Thanks Chuck, your the man! Learn something new every day.

Sorry to hear of your rifle trouble. Kimber will fix it for you. It should not have left the factory. I have know Idea if they will replace the barrel or repair. I am no gunsmith but it sounds like they could clean up and polish the chamber if it is leaving a deep scratch maybe a burr in the chamber. Keep us informed.

Well i sure hope they fix it for me. I have always been a Kimber rifle fan and have owned several, classic's, select grades and even a special edition 84M and i still have my original 8400 first production year 270win. When this hunter rifle first came out i thought ah i just don't know but it grew on me and i finally bought one and i really like the rifle. I mean i cant describe it i just really like it and in a 280AI makes it kind of all around like the gun you will most always reach for when heading out hunting. BUT if they don't fix it the wheels have been turning upstairs and i have several custom and semi customs over the years i would have it barreled but it is a big expense i did not plan on. So time will tell the story and SO WILL I.lol....I have a big mouth and i have shot all over the country and love to tell stories .

Well i sent the Kimber Hunter back to Kimber and they had it a while and they replaced the barrel on it. I shot six factory rounds through it and the cases look ok it did not do too well but i was not shooting well and did not feel like fooling with it. So yea they did fix it and time will tell if it shoots or not.
