Ambi Safety disassembly PITA

Thanks to this OIT (old indian trick), after several hours and attempts I was finally able to do a detailed strip on my New2Me Colt XSE. I've taken a few 1911s apart, some many times, but Jeez, WTF!!!

I had to watch several YouTube videos before I found this one that shared the OIT and I completed the first real cleaning, I think, this pistol has ever received outside of Wilson cleaning it before doing a refinish. OIT is at the 3 minute mark.

Nice trick to know!!! How old was that Indian?

While watching that trick on the video, I had visions of him slipping and jamming that sharpened screwdriver into the hand he was holding the pistol with!!! Well, he didn't slip. I guess that is what qualifies him as a "professional"!!!

Thanks for sharing there, Montaner!!

I did the OIT a few times, till the screwdriver wasn't needed. I was happy to find this video. It felt like the 2 safety halves were permanently together. I felt no give. It took a few taps with a nylon hammer to fit them back together again.

Great video, but I don't like the sharpened screw driver trick. I can be a bit impatient and would probably scratch my gun or stab my hand.

That won't work on a Kimber with an ambi safety, the left side has to be removed first, once the left side safety is removed, rotate the right side safety up approx 90 degrees. The hammer pin is longer and has a groove in it which holds the right side safety in place.

Another trick

I am not the originator of this trick; but it works well. This can also help with a Kimber or RIA. Slide a loop of dental floss that you have tied together (as a loop) under the right side safety lever. Then after loop is under lever pull the other end through the loop around the pin portion. Now gently pull pull outward as you wiggle the lever. Eliminates the nasty screw driver prying method.
