Curious

After shooting my newly-cleaned Kimber Custom Pro CDP II on June 5, I had experienced another FTB, so I decided to clean the extractor again.

This time, I used a jeweler’s loupe when I cleaned it, and I made sure it was absolutely spotless. I noticed something odd, however. At the base of the extractor, near where the end is exposed at the rear of the slide, it appears that some sort of plating (nickel?) is peeling off. It also appears to be peeling in the slot where the firing pin retaining plate slides into it. Has anybody else seen this? Is it normal?

I would have included a picture, but my camera's macro lens capability seems to be broken. If anybody needs to see it, however, I will ask my granddaughter to try to get a picture through the jeweler's loupe using her cell phone.

Richard, I just went to the Kimber website and typed "extractor" into the search box. It appears that they sell extractors for about 30 bucks. My proviso is to check to make sure this is a "drop in" part.

The old saying on stoppages is that if it ain't the magazine it's the extractor. My life is worth 30 bucks--well, it is to me no matter what most of the population thinks--and that would seem to be a piddling price for peace of mind. It's the same cost as some magazines, and we buy five or six of those without thinking.

If the extractor is of proper tension the plating is a very distant likely cause. Can't say it its common, as I've never inspected an extractor so closely.

I don't believe that it is causing any specific problems. I was just curious as to whether anybody knows if this part is plated, rather than being made of Stainless Steel, and why the plating might be peeling off. It is a part of the extractor that is not under tension -- the "butt" portion of the extractor that fits snugly into the extractor channel in the slide.

Okay, Chuck. I'll try to post a picture. It's cloudy today, so I don't know how good the light is, but I'll give it a try.

Here are the pictures of my extractor showing the apparent peeling off of the plating:

The plating appears to be peeling off all over the part.

Richard, sell the TWL, use the funds to buy an extractor. I can get you another Lansky, but that extractor has got to go...
