Differences between Eclipse Ultra & Super Carry Ultra HD

I know about the rear sight, the trigger, the finish, the slight butt difference, the ambi safety, and the back and front strap checkering, am I missing anything? Oh, and the 1oz weight difference. Seems like not all that much different for the extra that the HD cost. Every time I figure I've decided on my next gun I spot another that becomes part of the equation. I'll probably have a hard time putting my hands on an HD. Thanks!

Stay safe, John

It looks like you've nailed all the differences in the two guns, I think they're both beautiful. If you really want the HD try gunbroker.com, not only should you be able to find one you will probably save yourself a couple of bucks.

I think you covered the main items. Now, consider how some of those differences got there. Custom shop. Extra labor. Individualized attention to each gun. (I may be reading more into the Custom Shop moniker than exists.)

I've held several Ultra models. Because of the length of the grip, I prefer the rounded heel of the SCUHD. I would own any Eclipse model. I like the look. But I dearly love my Super Carry Ultra HD.

I have both guns on watch lists on Gunbroker. No matter how you look at it they are $300+ apart. I've held the Eclipse Ultra, but not the HD. I'm thinkin' the Eclipse will do just fine as I like Stainless and adding an ambi safety is relatively easy. I have medium sized hands which covers the grip fairly well so it shouldn't snag coming out of concealment. Just gotta come up with the money. Two engaged daughters is slowing money accumulation this year. Sure wish I could find a definitive answer of what they do in the custom shop to make it a custom shop gun. Might be subject to the gunsmith's day. Who knows. I'm probably over thinking this.

Stay safe, John

Kimber really doesn't have a custom shop like other gun companies do. They produce custom shop quality guns on a production line at a less then custom shop cost.

SCUHD doesn't have the Schwartz safety.

Don't know if that's relevant.

Not just the SCUHD but any Kimber that doesn't have a II in it's name.

Yeah, but that's not on the comparison list.

Don't know enough about the Swartz (or Schwartz) safety for it to be relevant or not. I believe I've seen pictures of what it does, and read a little about it. It's to late to search it tonight. Is there a pro and con list for it? Failures? Downsides? Obviously at some point they did not have them and for some reason (people getting hurt?) they decided to make and install them. Is there a good side? Or is it politics? Is Kimber the only one with it? Thanks again.

Stay safe, John

Kimbers with "II" in the name have a Firing Pin Block safety added - it's a version of an old 1930's design called a Swartz FP block, intended to prevent the firing pin from moving forward under inertia from being dropped or something. It is deactivated by a plunger in the frame when the grip safety is depressed.
Marshall likes this.
