1911 Ultra Take Down Tool

I have been doing a little research in prep for initial breakdown and cleaning of my new Pro Carry II. I watched a couple of YouTube videos where the Kimber Take-down tool was used. MHO is that little tool makes me nervous. A couple of guys use the 1911 Ultra Take Down tool. What's the general thinking on the tool from Kimber versus other solutions?

I've never had a problem with Kimbers "L" tool or a bent paperclip. If you upgrade your recoil spring to a Wilson Combat flat wire spring kit you won't need any tools to break the gun down. I run WC flat wire recoil springs in all of my 4" and 5" guns.

I just replaced my guide rod and recoil spring in a SS Pro carry II that I bought used. I could see nicks in the aluminum cap from the tool he was using and it caused me to polish the inside of the slide where the cap sits because it was scarred I had to press it into place. Now the new cap and flat wire spring from Wilson no tool need and no chance of nicking the metal. The flat wire spring is good for many thousands of rounds before requiring a change. Kimber reccomends to change before a thousand rds.

On the Pro models Kimber recommends changing the recoil spring at 800 rounds. Wilson Combat puts their recoil spring life at about 40,000 rounds.

I have the NDZ tool for my UCII & PCII and love not using that pain in the arse "L" tool. As Chuck stated the WC flat wire is also an option since that spring will last must longer.

I haven't watched that NDZ tool video in a while. Watching it reminds me of why I went with the Wilson Combat Recoil Spring Kits. By the time he had the tool installed on the guide rod I could have the slide off of my gun and the recoil spring off of the guide rod with just my 2 bare hands.

The NDZ tool replaces the one Kimber "L" tool with 2 tools, the WC flat wire kit eliminates all tools. Not to mention that the recoil spring that comes with the kit will in all probability out last the life of the gun owner.

Live has decidedly improved since I quit using the Kimber tool and invested in the 1911 Ultra tool.
