Question for the Compact/ Ultra people

I watched a video by Bill Wilson/Wilson Combat stating that the ultra sized 1911s would run best with a slightly lighter load 200-185 gr weights.
Reason being the magazine can load the rounds slightly faster as the lighter weight slide is also moving faster than a standard full size 1911.

Being as its Bill Wilson I would like to trust this.

So has anyone noticed improved performance running these lighter loads?

Thanks

I like heavy bullets and shoot 230gr .45's and 147gr. 9mm's. Off the top of my head I would estimate that I've shot well over 50,000 rounds through my Ultra and Pro size guns and never had that problem. Remember Bill Wilson won't make an Ultra (3") or Pro (4") size gun because he doesn't believe in anything less then a 4 1/4" 1911.

Hard to argue with that, but being new to the 1911 I was curious. never hurts to pick the brains of people with the experience.

Thanks Chuck43

I'm not at Chuck's round count but shot a lot of different ammo loads in my Ultra's and never seen any difference in performance in lighter loads. Difference I've found is more snappy recoil firing +P ammo.

Wilson is trying to sell you a 3K+ pistol. I've watched that video.

I guess I'm in the same boat as Mr. Wilson I have no real use for any 1911 smaller than a Commander size. Today I only own full size 1911s but I shot a Colt Commander for several years in IPSC. Anything smaller just doesn't fit my hand size well. And since I don't carry a .45 I don't buy HPs or 185s very often. I tend to stick to 230gr hardball just for shootin' stuff on the range or USPSA. Hardball tends to run the best in everything I own.

The only small auto I do own is a 9mm, double stack 12+1 for the grip size it's all about size and comfort for me. So ... no Micros or officers models in my safe.

I find my Ultra II much easier to control with the 185 gn rounds I use. My name isn't Bill Wilson and I don't have tens of thousands of rounds through any of my .45s. But, having shot competitively with an AMT Longslide, a Colt Series 70 and my Ultra, I believe I do know how much difference the barrel length vs. round weight can be. The long slide and the Series 70 both liked the 230 gn. rounds. They were easy to control and regaining the target was simple and fast. The Ultra, however, does much better with the 185 gn. rounds. Greatly reduced recoil and faster target acquisition. Could it be the weight, since both the longer barrelled weapons are all steel? Could be. But, I didn't discern much difference when firing Ruger's new short barrel, all steel version.

My hunting buddy was a champion competition shooter with a .45, I don't know what you call the class he was in but it involved running and shooting I believe 3 targets with several magazine changes and it was scored on time & accuracy.

Anyhow he carried a Kimber Tactical Ultra 95% of the time and never shot with anything but full power 185's and boy would it shoot! I shot it many times and it was very enjoyable except with Corbon 185 + P's, then after a few mags it hurt.

BTW, I guess just by his choice, he carried all his self defense 45's loaded staggered, starting with FMJ then HP's until mags were full. Any 5" 45 he carried was loaded with 230's.

Haven't had any problems with 230 grain through my Ultra, so it's hard to compare.

Interesting I've heard of some people who did just the opposite load... putting a hot hollow point in the pipe followed by a mag of FMJ hardball for the confidence in follow up shots not jamming. I know that some guns just don't run as well with HPs but others will eat everything. But that's why we practice with what we carry... so we'll know.

I know that Tactical Ultra he has will shoot any 185gr. that you put in it. I guess it just has the correct spring and is set up right. I've tried buying it from him several times but I guess you know what he said I could go do.
