Newbie Needs Help With Magazines

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I’m a total newbie about 1911s. I’m getting an Aegis Elite Pro .45 and I’m trying to understand magazines.

Do I need to get special mags or will any 1911 mag fit? My husband has an old Rock Island (I think) and has several cheap mags for it but I’m confused as if they will fit my Kimber. He’s a Glock Guy and doesn’t know much about 1911s so he’s not helpful

I have read that Kimber uses Checkmate for mags, and when I look at them there are so many different types I have no clue what to buy as extras because I want more than just one. Also, I have read it’s better to get 7 round mags versus 8...

I looked at Joe’s Mag Mania but there are so many different types.

I’m super confused. I’m looking for mags I can drop in the dirt at the range and not have to worry about them. Any help for this newbie would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Lesa

Your Aegis Pro will require "Full Size" 1911 magazines. Ultra size Kimber's use compact size. I'm using 40 year old Colt and no name magazines, Kimber mag that comes with pistol, Kimber KimPro Tac mags, a whole lot of Joes' magazines. Joes' mags are great for the range. Just order 45acp Full size 1911 in blued or stainless I have both they all work great.

The more rounds (8) the better IMO. My spare EDC magazines are full size 10 round Chip McCormick's in stainless. It's your choice. Never hurts to have a extra round.

Not sure? Not heard of a wadcutter magazine. Wadcutter ammo now I've heard of that.
Post a pic of wadcutter and hybrids mags.

OK, interesting. I say all my magazines look like the wadcutter. That's news to me, where did you find that. Learn something everyday. lol

Hope this helps.

I use both Kimber stock mags that come with the weapon, and 10 KimPro Tac-Mags for pro size .45 (8 rd)and 9mm (9 rd) weapons. I haven't had an issue with either weapon for 185 to 230 gr. rds. or 115 to 147 gr. rds. respectively. The first thing I would do if I experienced an FTF or FTE would be to assure that my grip on the weapon was sufficiently firm (tight? strong?).

I am shooting a Tactical Pro in .45 and my wife's Sapphire Pro in 9mm. Note that these are full-size frames.

BTW, Midway USA is a good source for Kimber mags; If you get one and it works flawlessly, that's good to know.
