Contract Post Office Branches

I've had this question for awhile & can't seem to find a solid answer.

The local post office I use is in a strip mall. It's licensed by the post office, but also sells other stuff (greeting cards, trinkets, etc.). It's not Mailboxes, etc or any of those. The sign just says Post Office.

They are not posted anywhere on the door or inside the building.

So ..... Can I legally CCW inside this branch???

Good question, a federal post office does not have to display a no gun sticker on the door and if they do have them they are usually inside on a bulletin board, they just assume that everyone knows you can't carry in a government building. There's a good chance because it's not a government building that it would be OK to carry but I'd ask before trying it. Try an email to whoever issues the carry permits in your state, here in Illinois it's the Illinois State Police.

Around here they are starting to put Post Office services in Staples office supply stores. My perspective (not a legal opinion) is that the building is first a Staples, and secondarily provides Post Office services. Ergo, I personally would not have a problem carrying inside a Staples, even if the was a Post Office sign on the wall outside along with the Staples sign. YMMV Consult your legal adviser before accepting such advice.

If you were in Florida, I would say absolutely you can carry there. Heck, I use stamps.com and I can do everything the Post Office can do.

Cool Try This!!

I believe that the simplest answer to this question would be to ask one of the employees of the branch if the U.S. government owned/leased the building. If the answer is no, well then, as Taurus puts it....CARRY ON!!!

LOL, I asked a Postal employee in a Post Office once why there were not signs about carrying and she said she didn't know and didn't care as long as I didn't shoot her. I was not carrying.

I shipped a rifle through the post office once. An AR. I brought it in all boxed up. The clerk told me the box should not have been sealed, so they could see it was unloaded. I told her sorry, I didn't know. she asked if it was unloaded and I said yes.

She said great, no problem. Shipped it right out. Easy as pie.

I spoke with an employee at said Post Office Contract Station today - asked her what it meant that the sign in their window said "contract station".

She said it meant their location charges the same fees for stamps & postage as the main branch, & is locally owned/run by her boss as a small business.

To me that says the building is leased (like all the others in the strip mall) & not official GOVERNMENT PROPERTY.

I do plan on contacting the local sheriff's office for a final answer when I have some spare time.

Looks like CC there is going to be OK. I mean, unless it is really crowded how long does it take to buy stamps and mail something...3 or 4 min. tops.

It's not a post office. No mail is delivered there. No mail is sorted there. It's no different than buying stamps at Walgreens or Staples.
