Condition 1 Carry Question

This being my first 1911 a question I have. When carrying with the hammer cocked does this weaken the hammer spring over time, if so how often should it be replaced

No, leaving the hammer cocked will have no effect on the spring. Compressing a spring or letting it sit relaxed has no effect on it. It's the compression and decompression cycles that weaken the spring.

At one time it was probably true that leaving a spring compressed would weaken it but modern spring steel alloys are not affected by this.

My UC2 has never had the hammer uncocked. It has been in Condition One just short of four years continually.

Talking It's Okay!!

John M Browning designed it to work that way. You will get tired and worn out before that spring does!!

I used to own a Walther P-38 my dad brought back from France and WWII. He stuck it in an old box, magazine fully loaded, hammer cocked, no round in chamber and it stayed that way from his return to the states in 1945 or so, until I was starting high school. As we were moving from TN to MS, he ran across the thing and once we got to MS, I cleaned it and went and found some 9mm ammo. Took the gun out and it fired the 1945 ammo just fine. Fed perfectly. Fired old and new ammo with no problems popping the primers. After being cocked for 20 years and with the magazines (he had two total) fully loaded for all those years. Springs were as good after 20 years as they were when the gun was boxed after the war. As others have said, cocked and locked won't damage anything. Except for someone trying to do you bodily harm.

My Eclipse Ultra has been cocked and locked for 6 years of carrying. Works like new. No worries.
