NIght SIghts are Here!

Thrilling. I got my Micro 9 night sights yesterday and will call my installer tomorrow. Very excited. Had a little episode last night with the Micro 9 and after calling it Marshall a couple of times, overcame what was not a problem at all. It all sounds very mystical doesn't it? I had a firing pin issue, it's an age thing.......

So how does a gunsmith install sights to ensure their alignment?

I use calipers and dividers as a backup.

What, just put everything on the centerline of the slide?
That seems too easy. There must be more to it.

I watched our gunsmith do mine and he simply measured it with some device and placed them back where the factory placed them...

I was so amazed at how quickly he had it done and his words to me were.....

"It's not rocket science "....

If the manufacturer does there job and the barrel vs the slide and are all perfectly aligned, then it is just a matter of centering the sights. It really isn't rocket science. It can be fast with the right tools but not so fast if you are using a hammer and punch.
For many years I did it that way. Never ruined a gun or sight. But now that I'm getting older, I invested in 3 tools just for that job because I install more sights than most common owners.

1) Universal sight pusher
2) Decent set of calipers
3) A set of medical dividers like the doctors use for reading charts. Not like an architect or cryptographer would use.

Pretty much good to go with that.

I was always under the impression that Kimber put a bit of Locktite on the sights at the factory, but there was none on the sights when our gunsmith removed them.....Learn something new everyday..
