1st time at the range w/Micro 9 - Quick Report

Picked up a Micro 9 last week, got to the range today. Put 300 rounds through it. Had about 6-8 misfeeds. I was running the Kimber 7rnd mag and a Sig Sauer 7rnd mag. The Sig magazine ran flawlessly. The Kimber mag would misfeed the 3rd round of a full mag, once in a while it would be the 2nd round. The round would be nose down and hung up right under the feed ramp on the barrel. So it never made it to the ramp.

Talked to the gun shop owner at the range and he said it was likely a magazine issue, either the spring or the follower. I'll call Kimber on Monday and see if they'll send me a new magazine. The Sig Sauer magazine was flawless. I'd estimate that the Kimber magazine misfed about every 3rd or 4th magazine.

Overall, loved the gun and she was already sighted in good for my level of shooting. I sighted the laser a little closer than the factory 50' sighting. I sighted it in around 25' which again, was very good for my ability. Really enjoyed the day - been a long time since I got out.

In the meantime, I've gone and ordered another Sig Sauer Magazine and will shave that one down like I did the other.

you might want to try taking the Kimber mags apart and cleaning them. I've had no mag issues so far with mine, bought in June and at about 600 rounds.

I'll have to look at the M9 magazine again... didn't seem like you could tear them apart like my 1911 mags?!

I took a look at the Kimber magazine and don't see any way to disassemble it. I guess if you needed a new spring you'd just buy an entirely new magazine?!

FWIW, I did compare the spring stiffness of the Sig Sauer and the Kimber magazine, and the Sig Sauer spring is definitely stiffer than the Kimber. By how much I don't know... but maybe that contributed to the Kimber not always feeding correctly but the Sig Magazine did?!

You could buy springs from wolf springs and the mags come apart. Just google it or dig deeper into our forum, but if it is new contact Kimber. Good luck.

Some have suggested leaving the mags FULL for a week or so.

Yep, got it appart - not near as easy as the full size 1911's... but not a huge ordeal either. Thanks! I'll be calling Kimber tomorrow just to have them send me a new one. No reason it should hang up when new.

Called Kimber today, they're sending me out a new 7rnd magazine. I tried to find new springs/followers for the M9 magazine - nothing anywhere... nothing for the P938 either. So I just took it apart and stretched the spring a bit... it's stiffness inside the mag is similar to the other now (it wasn't as stiff before). Also cleaned inside of mag real good and inspected - nothing obvious as far as defect. Took the metal follower and filed on all the edges just to make sure there's nothing to catch anywhere. We'll try it out again late this week or next. I have the new Kimber mag coming in now as well as another P938 mag... so I will be fine on mags without this one anyway.

Have you tried the Sig P290 8-round mag in the Micro 9?

I like it better than the Kimber mags, but you do have to cut a new disconnector slot in the mag and rework the baseplate.
(after I took this photo, I've since rounded off the rear of the baseplate substantially more in order to make it more closely resemble the Kimber).

WOW! I just looked up the P290 8-round and you did quite a bit of work on that magazine. The base is quite different!! Well done!

I have not tried one of those. What made you decide to do all the work to a P290 magazine instead of using a P938 magazine? The 938 matches up on the disconnector slot and a bit less customizing on the baseplate.
