That ammo is, BTW, the only .380 that consistently passes the FBI's desired penetration desires.....

YMMV

Watched a few of those videos last night which was a big help. I always have ran Speer gold dots but I think I'm going to start with federal hydro shocks. I did some testing of 45 ACP years ago with gold dot and critical defense. The gold dot seems to preform really well and the critical defense did poorly, failures to expand, some fragmented, some had complete jacket separation.

Those videos are good for demonstrating which loads have a tendency to properly expand at .380 velocities and still yield decent penetration. He got very consistent results with most everything loaded with an XTP, so that's what I carry in .380 most of the time. I do have a back up magazine of hard cast flat nose in .380, if I ever get to that it will be because the hollow points are not getting the job done.

As far as the Precision One goes, all it shows it that lot of ammo happened to hit the sweet spot of velocity for his gun on his test to get optimum results in his medium for that test. Hardly magic. It does show yet again that the XTP is a good choice though.

+1 on the hardcast. I was running that only in the Winter (Underwood 100 gr flatnose) and then switched over to the Underwood Xtreme Defender. The little .380 needs all the penetration help it can get. Summer time its XTP. Haven't had a single problem with any of them.

I had to check, but I dropped the magazine in my P238 and I found those little "red balls" in my hollowpoints, as well.

It's been a while, but I think my original reasoning was that having something in the hollowpoint might ease feeding in an emergency.

I carry the Buffalo Bore 90gr in +P. I have never had any issues and shot a box through mine after it was broke in. Still, havent had any issues.
I would not recommend shooting this every day, but for self-defense, I want all I can get out of the little case.

Not trying to gross anyone out but this is a coon that raided my
feed bin one to many times. I shot him with a Kahr P380 Critical
Defense round. He was facing me. The round entered behind the
ear on the opposite side and exited where you see the pic. One shot
and he was dead instantly. Anyone who has coon hunted knows
how tough these animals are. I was actually impressed and I'm
an old school .45 ACP man. This P380 is my backup and I have
no qualms about my wife of 52 years carrying her LCP. The .380
of today is not the .380 of years ago.

Did you happen to recover the slug? It would be very interesting to see if it expanded. You can test with gel and boxes of news papers all day long but nothing is like the real world variables.

No I didn't. I'd have been interested in it too but it went thru the
floor of the feed bin into the ground and I'd have to move the whole
building or rip out the floor to get it. Just not interested in doing either
of those things. I'm sure it expanded though. That was a nasty
wound a good 1/2 to 3/4 inch in diameter and a solid doesn't make
that kind of wound.

The exit wound sure made it look like it expanded fine. If it hadn't it probably would have been much harder to find the exit.
