K6 has rust under grips, any advice how to stop this?

I have a K6 with the factory rubber grips. I pulled the grips while cleaning it and there was a good amount of rust under them.

I just pulled them two weeks ago and found the same and cleaned under them that time as well. I plan on ordering some Altamont wood grips for it this week. I put a coating of remoil under there last time and it didn't seem to help much.

I live in Florida and I'm thinking the combination of the rubber grips and humidity here is what's causing this.

Humid salty air. Like having a Vinyl top on a car in Florida back in the day. That salt air eats em up. I would try a light coat of Vaseline or light grease before installing the grips.

IMHO, G10 like VZ's are a better choice for fighting moisture than wood.

Instead of oil, use Renaissance Wax. Museums use it to protect metal parts.

You can get it at Amazon.com

I think the rusting process will have to be stopped before any kind of rust protection will be effective.

Naval jelly? Brass brush? Very Fine steel wool?

Then, Breakfree, FP10, Ren Wax, probably other products would also work.

I just got back from Europe.

Today I inspected under the grips, clean as a whistle. I applied Renaissance Wax, it usually protects for about six months.

I also applied it to the front face of the cylinder. No, that doesn't rust, but the wax really makes it easier to clean off the carbon.

Last, a light coat to the entire gun made it look real nice.
