Went to the range this morning and did some chronographing. Values are 3 shot (I know, 5 or 6 are better, but conserving ammo, and shooting much of these full bore magnum loads with that little rubber boot grip HURTS) averages at 10 feet from the muzzle. ProChrono. 70 degrees F.

————————————————————————————————
.357 Magnum loads:

Remington Express 125 grain SJHP - 1282 FPS for 459 ft/lbs ME.

Speer Gold Dot 125 grain JHP - 1267 FPS for 448 ft/lbs ME.

———————————————————————————
.38 Special +P loads:

Speer Gold Dot 125 grain JHP - 850 FPS for 202 ft/lbs ME.

Winchester SuperX 125 grain JHP - 872 FPS for 212 ft/lbs ME.

Winchester Personal Protection 125 grain JHP - 912 FPS for 232 ft/lbs ME.

Federal Classic 110 grain JHP - 891 FPS for 195 ft/lbs ME.

A couple of interesting things, the 2 magnum loads chronograph higher out of the Kimber’s 2” barrel than they do out of my Ruger SP101’s 2 1/4” barrel. This parallels the fact that the same .45 ACP loads are 30-40 FPS faster out of my Kimber Classic’s 5” barrel than my Ruger SR1911’s 5” barrel. Makes it look like Kimber makes “faster” barrels than Ruger.

Anyway hope some find this of value.

Edited to add:

Hornady Critical Defense .357 Mag 125 grain JHP - 1240 FPS for 429 ft/lbs ME.

Useful, thanks! Demonstrates once again that 357 loads in short barrel DO make a difference (several relatively rigorous tests have demonstrated this with other guns). I tried the rubber grip last week, and it is an entirely different gun than using the $52 walnut grip, and for me not in a good way. My 357 Gold Dots were genuinely painful with rubber, not with walnut; I think the walnut allows the run to roll with recoil as bird’s head grips on other guns do, while the rubber grabs the skin or glove and does not let go. One more suggestion would be to try the 135 gr. Gold Dot short barrel loads rather than the 125 loads designed for longer barreled guns.

Keep up the good work!

Thanks for that information. I have the K6s with factory laser grips which are both rubber front and woodlike material over the sides. They work well and the laser makes that gun very deadly even for a novice shooter.

That’s very good to hear. I just ordered a 3” model, and it’s going to come with the smooth walnut grips. I’ve never had that type on a hard kicking handgun, and was already figuring on ordering a pair of the rubber CT grips for it. Based on your experience I’ll give the smooth walnuts a try first.

I just bought a quantity of Hornady Critical Defense 125 grain JHPs and will chronograph them out of my 2” shortly. They did well in Lucky Gunners ammo test, and coincidentally, Luck Gunner was using a 2” K6s for their 2” ammo results.
