Private transactions?

So I have some questions.

I am at the range with my friend Bob.

Bob is shooting a nice pistol, but shoots mine and likes it even more.

I am shooting Bob's pistol, and Like it better than mine.

Can bob and I trade? Do we need to involve an FFL?

Can I sell Bob my gun? Do I need to involve an FFL for that?

What if they are rifles instead of handguns?

Is it State by State? or is it a federal thing?

As long as he lives in the same state and he is not a felon, a simple bill of sale will do..

I've bought and sold many firearms privately.

In my home state of Illinois I just need a copy of his FOID card and a bill of sale.

Down here, as long as you're both state citizens and not felons, just swap, shake hands and head home.

Google N.C firearm transaction laws and you will see there is a pistol permit required from the local sheriff even if it is a private transaction.

That's messed up but it's the law in North Carolina..

Depends on the state. In Florida, you just swap and go home. When I buy from someone, I just hand over the cash and take the gun.
