Called Kimber

Called Kimber for status of the repairs to the rear sights on my Pro Raptor II. Surprisingly I was only on hold for 5 minutes waiting for a CSR. When I explained what I wanted he looked it up and told me the only status he could give me was "it is in for repairs" no other details. I asked how long it takes to repair rear sights, he didn't know but then told me they only received it on March 30th.

It's not how long it takes to fix it, it's how long it takes until it's turn to be worked on comes up.

Reading the posts about people returning their firearms to Kimber, there's probably a long queue.

Yep, must be. I love their 1911s, but the return rate must be horrible.

Look at the bright side..It's not the 30.5 million vehicles recalled by GM.......

GM's total recall cost: $4.1 billion - Feb. 4, 2015

Being the #1 seller of 1911's has it advantages and disadvantages. Sure they like seeing those plastic cases filled with Kimbers flying out of Yonkers, but the quality control sure does suffer and many pay the consequences for it and usually it's the consumer .....jmho

I often wonder what the true numbers of pistols sold to actual customers and the number returned for service really are. What percentage it would work out to.

A carefully guarded secret I'm sure..... Wouldn't want to give the bashers any more unneeded ammo....

Kimber is the largest manufacture of 1911's in the world, before they came out with the new micro and K6 guns they had about 100 models in production.

I purchased a used Custom TLE II with the thought of sending it back to Kimber to have it gone over and upgraded.

Calling their customer service line, I was quickly connected to a rep. who stated they could replace any worn parts and bring the pistol to near new condition. I was told that they could even upgrade my pistol if I like.

One of the things that I was interested in, was for the grip heel to be rounded like the Master Carry or Super Carry. It was then I was told it wasn't possible as the frames were manufactured to accept the bobtail backstrap at the time of production.

This made me aware that the so-called Custom Shop is little more than a shop of armorers then actual gunsmiths. While this might be okay for repairs, this is not what I expected from one of the largest providers of 1911 pistols.

I started to look around at other custom shops to see what the cost would be to make the changes I wanted to make. What I found was that before I was through. I would have more money into the project, then if I just bite the bullet and purchase the pistol I was trying to upgrade the TLE too.

So yesterday I ordered a "new" Kimber Master Carry Custom from Bucks and Jakes Outfitters in Boonville, Indiana via Gunbroker. And according to UPS tracking service, I should be able to pick it up sometime tomorrow afternoon.

With this new purchase, the TLE will soon find a new home as well as the Crimson Trace grips as I don't much care for laser sights. With the money gained, additions like 30 lpi checkering for both the front grip, mainspring housing as well as the rear of the slide. The dehorning of edges and Cerekoting of the entire pistol will conclude my search for the perfect 1911 everyday carry.
