Cosmetic Changes? Differing Catalog?

Being a new Kimber owner, I picked up a Kimber catalog at Gander Mountain today. I was surprised and confused when I looked at both the pistols in the catalog, and those on the Kimber website.

As you can see from the photo I just took, my Ultra Carry II has a black frame and a black slide, trimmed in a hard-chrome grip safety and matching ambidextrous thumb safeties. It also has the Crimson Trace.

However, no such model is shown in the catalog or on the website, and the grip safety on mine is more akin to the ones on the Raptor models--which I prefer.

Do I have a 2014 UC2, which has been dropped in the 2015 catalog? Now, I'm not complaining--try and get this one away from me. Granted, I would like to have the night sights, but that's an easy addition.

Anyone know the reason for the changes? Oh, and the customer service department at Kimber is sending me a Tac-Mag magazine. Anyone have one of those, and why are they preferred?

Kimber changes stuff like that on a pretty regular basis.

I actually like the two-tone effect. It reminds me of the older IPSC models.

In fact, the trigger and the slide stop are also hard-chromed. It seems like everything you would touch in normal operation is hard-chromed, making those parts more corrosion resistant.

Yours was probably a special run. Stores like Gander Mountain, Cabelas, and BassPro often have "exclusive" options that are only available in their stores.

A big light just went on!

When I talked to the Kimber customer service rep, he asked for my pistol's serial number. He said it would begin with "KU."

I responded that my number began with KGMU. Coupled with your comment, I believe that means "Gander Mountain.

The KimPro Tac-Mags are Kimbers premium magazines, I've got 14 and never had a problem with one of them.

Glad to hear that. My discussion with the rep started with a conversation about some rounds failing to go completely into battery and my magazine problems. We even touched on various loads.

Now, my problems centered on a Wilson-Rogers magazine, and I had two similar issues with a polished, compact, seven shot Kimber one. But we're discussing FTFs you can count on one hand. Still, the rep felt we should hunt down all possibilities.

At no charge, BTW, he's sending me this Tac-Mag. While he's aware that a couple of thorough cleanings and break-in rounds fixed the problem, our discussion centered on the defensive roll of my individual pistol. I'm delighted his first response was to make sure a tool I needed for safety and security worked perfectly.

As not to hijack my own thread but to return to the original issue, my UC2 frame is actually a shiny black, while the slide is a more muted version, probably to solve harsh light reflection.

What kind of coating is this?

They call it the KimPro II frame or slide finish depending on what part of the gun your talking about. Personally I don't think it's a very durable finish, I consider it one of Kimbers weak spots.

My PCII 9mm wasn't even 2 years old and it looked like it was 20 before I had it refinished.
GiGi's UCII has the same issue..I won't buy another Kimber unless it's a stainless or until they improve the Kim-Pro finish
