Break In for new Raptor.

Hey guys,

I just purchased this beautiful SS Pro Raptor 2. Just wanted to get your guys thoughts on the break in period. What ammo do you prefer I shoot my first 500 rounds with? Should I do a cleaning after or before the 500 rounds?

Also, is there anything I should be aware of, or suspect while during this period? I also hear guys talking about magazine changes because, the Kimber mag does not have a follower. Any recommendations on upgrading mags?

Thanks guys!

Welcome to the forum from northern Illinois Zildjian and congratulations on the new SS Pro Raptor. Follow the instructions in the owners manual and clean and lubricate the gun before your first range visit, any good 230 gr, RN ammo will work for breaking in the gun. As for Kimber magazines, I have well over 20 of them, some with round counts going into the thousands and they all work fine.

You're welcome, don't believe everything you read on other forums about Kimbers and Kimber magazines.

Get a couple Wilson Combat mags and load them up and keep them loaded, it will relax the new springs. Run some FMJ through it and some rounds you would like to Carry for defence. Make sure they all function. I ran about 300 round through my Eclipse before she was smooth as butter. I attribute that to mags being new. Only round it doesn't like is the Gold Dot Short Barrel 230 grain JHP. I still have a hanger every once in a while with those. Everything else stuffed in it comes out the barrel no problem.

P.S. Welcome from Michigan. Good Luck with the Raptor, I want one bad! But mama's got me on a short leash right now with the new Micro and 2000 rounds of ammo I just bought.

I have a SS Pro Raptor. It now has 700 rounds down range. All I shoot is Freedom Munitions reman 230 grain. It's been flawless and gets better all the time.

Clean before your first range trip. Then I clean after every range visit, whether that is 100 rounds or 200 rounds.

I have a Wilson Combat flat wire recoil spring kit waiting. Kimber recommends replacing recoil spring about 800 rounds. I think I can get a few more than that out of the original, but the flat wire is ready and waiting when needed.

Thank all you guys for the comments, I really appreciate this. Albert you had me cracking up reading your comment. My first 1911 I bought was about 4 years ago the Kimber Custom II. I added the tritium tactical wedge night sights and also found a seller on eBay selling the raptor grips back then. She's a beauty and ultra buttery now, I have well over 800 rounds through her and I finally just pulled the trigger on my new Kimber purchase! I wanted this baby for a very long time! I just want to break her in just right.. I was thinking about tryin out some WC mags. I have a couple ACT Mags and never had a problem with them. Thanks again guys for the help, I'm going to post photos of my Kimbers as well.
