An afternoon on the range

As the temp starts to climb in sunny Phoenix, your trigger time options start to come down to a drive to a cooler place or membership at an indoor range. I opted for the indoor range.

I wanted to fire a new "rescue" Kimber Ultra Carry (had not been loved) I had just acquired and I can always use the practice with my daily carry. My 28 yo son wanted to try out a pistol he had just purchased a .45 cal "Double Tap" derringer style BUG.

Both Kimbers are an absolute joy to shoot. Both ate every one the various 250 rounds I fed them flawlessly. My son shot the "Double Tap" first. No muzzle flip and for no frill sights, it did a decent job at 25 feet. He said it was a little "snappy" with the recoil which amounted to a nearly straight back kick.

I took a turn with this well made but IMHO little novelty gun. First round was spot on and the recoil was more than just snappy. I put six round through it and my hand still hurt the following day. My son put 12 rounds through it and bruised his hand. NOT a fun gun to shoot. It performed as a BUG should with reliable hits at short range and functions as it should.

Then it was off to the strategically placed nearby pub and a well-deserved pint of Guinness. Slainte!

Cool Cool!!!

Hey JCB, thanks for the range report. We enjoy reading how other member's Kimbers are performing. How about a picture or two of youR "rescue Kimber"?? (We like pictures!!) Be sure to give it a good home!!

My brother lives in Phoenix. I went to a niece's wedding there a few years ago. It was in the summer and it was an outdoor wedding. At 8:00 PM it was still 110 degree! I have never forgiven her for that!!! Thanks, but I'll take a nice cool lemonade while sitting in the shade of the Georgia pines here in beautiful downtown Monroe!!!

Don't get me wrong, Arizona IS beautiful, it's just too damn hot in the summer!!!! For the right price, I can be talked into selling you some Georgia shade!!!

Congrats on saving that Ultra Carry!!! Shoot it often, keep 'em in the black and be safe!!!

That Double Tap derringer does not sound like fun to shoot. Sounds more like torture!!! As a extreme last ditch survival tool, it probably has a niche somewhere as a BUG, but not for me!! My little Smith and Wesson M&P40 Shield fills that slot very nicely!!!Tell your son that he's a hell of a man for shooting that beast!!!

Any day that starts with a bang and ends with a beer is a success. Saving unloved Kimbers is a noble pursuit, so, thank you for taking the risk.

But it's a dry heat. Or so they say.

I will try to remember and take some and post them. There will be everything from Thompsons to MP5s there. Bunch of pre '86 gun collectors in that crowd shooting now very expensive classics. Me being a poor boy will shoot in semi auto class with a 9mm short barreled AR. My access to my employers MP5s is not that good anymore.
