22 Conversion Kit

I picked up a used 1911 22 Conversion kit today that I found on a local gun trader site. Plan to use in my Colt Gov frame.

Slide installed very easily but Iím noticing the magazine is not latching in. It will cycle ammo fine. Looking at the mag catch area I canít see any issues like a worn edge in the catch notch (itís all plastic). Can any of you that have this kit offer any insight ?

Does Colt (or Wilson-Rogers) make their own .22 magazine for a 1911?

I bought four Kimber magazines for my Compact Conversion kit, and they fit perfectly.

I have both the compact and target conversion kits and about 10 magazines for them. I wish I could offer some help but I've never experienced any problems with the magazines.

Thanks Gents,

I'm gonna order another magazine (was going to do that anyway) and see if there is any change in how it works.

Mark the top of the mag lips and follower with Sharpie and work the slide as you attempt to seat it. I found some of mine had to be sanded a few thousandths in order to lock in. Also make sure the baseplate does not strike the bottom of the frame before locking. Have seen some the needed relieved there.

Thanks Mike240 ! I had also found some posts on another forum that indicate the conversion kit won't work on a 9mm 1911 frame. I will have to do some checking (need to go back and read the posts).

I use my kits on both my 9mm and .45 1911's with no trouble.

Magazine fitting makes the most difference with the .22 conversions. The rounds have to be held high for feeding and the differences on slide to frame fit from gun to gun can matter. Those that find their .22 conversion only runs with expensive and high velocity ammo need to to see if the slide is making contact with the top of the magazine. The recoil energy of the .22 is so light, that anything that adds a friction point, drags the slide speed and can effect function. I shoot the heck of cheap Federal bulk pack with a Kimber conversion and cheap Brownells mags. But I had to fit them a bit. Even the Kimber mag drug on the slide. It would run with Stingers but after fitting, it runs on anything I have tried.

I've argued with myself over the issue of my .22LR conversion kit for over a year. It started when I wanted a break-down Ruger 10/22. A favorite rifle of preppers.

I figured I was in the most danger in the mall, the last place I wanted to be firing Hornady Critical Defense ammunition. But with a Crimson Trace, it would be easy to hit an attacker upside the head with a .22LR.

After all, the Mafia uses it, and you never hear of any "complaints" from the recipients.

And yikes, I have four magazines, that's 40 shots. I don't think Davy Crockett fired 40 shots in all his time at the Alamo.

Worse case scenario, my wife picks up the .22LR Kimber off my corpse and avenges my death.

(Oh, a Gunsite Raven grad told me that in a crowd, I should kneel down and shoot 'up' at the aggressor. If I miss or puncture him, the bullet goes into the ceiling).
