Ultra vs. Pro + ammo questions

[B]Hello all.
Well I've made up my mind almost on a Kimber 45. I just got my Aegis Ultra 9mm and really like it. Now I've made up my mind I want a Kimber 45, the discontinued Tactical Pro II at 28 oz. or the Tactical Ultra II at 25 oz. My main question will there be much if any recoil difference in the two? I've found both NIB at a decent price and almost the same price. I do have minor arm & hand strength issues but I shoot my HK USP 45 OK.

My next question is about 45 ammo. I know most everyone shoots 230 gr. but do 1911's function well and reliable with 185's? I'm aware they have less mass but the velocity is considerably higher with the 185's also. The reason for asking is I have a case of Remington 185 ball and a case of Remington 185 HP Golden Sabers that I've had 3-4 years inside the house.

I welcome and appreciate any opinions or comments.

I have Ultra, Pro and Custom size Kimbers and I shoot the same .230gr. FMJ range ammo in all of them. About the only difference I notice in shooting them is less muzzle rise with the Custom. I know big grown men that have trouble shooting full size .45's and small women that have no trouble controlling Ultra .45's, strength is not necessarily the determining factor. I've shot 185gr ammo and not noticed any difference in the performance of the guns.

...just to mention. I think it's considered "ideal" to use the heavier ammo for break-in. You may want to grab 500 or so rounds of some 230gr FMJ.
...remember to post the pics of your new shooter :-)

I have also tried 185gr ammo and had no issues but now I use 230gr. I really didn’t notice a big difference in recoil. I don’t think there is a big difference in recoil from a Pro to an Ultra.

I have and have also tried the 185 grn ammo. As all the above stated almost no noticable difference.

I have all three size's of Kimber pistols just like Chuck, Custom, Pro, Ultra. I always test fire a couple magazines full of 185gr Speer Bonded Hollow Points +P in all my pistols and the only time there is a noticeable increase in recoil, muzzle blast, fire ball is when I fire them in one of the Ultra's. They are HOT, HOT, HOT and only takes about 14 rounds for my wrist to feel stress.

Oh I think you should buy the Tactical Pro .45, you can always buy a Ultra in .45 later if you feel your hands can take it. Any friends or place you could try out (fire) a 45 Ultra before buying?

You would have a Ultra in 9mm and a Pro in .45 that covers your bases IMO.

Sharp2,
I was a little younger and a little stronger than now but I used to shoot my buddy's Tactical Ultra 45 at the deer lease with 185 +p Golden Sabers and it was one amazing firearm. I probably shot it better than any gun I own, it just shot where I was looking.

The only downside when wearing it working in the brush country was that the ambi safety got knocked off safety quite a bit. I prefer a strong side safety only and if I get one, I will have it changed to a single. On another note I never had an AD. My holster of choice then was a cross draw holster and if I was in condition to carry it would still be a cross draw. So very comfortable when sitting, riding a horse, or in a vehicle.

I have an Ultra .45 and love that thing. I have fired 185,200 and 230 grain and didn’t notice any difference in recoil between them. I’ve never fired a +p round as in my personal experience it’s not necessary. I only recently began to carry hollow points as I feel the 230 gr, ball RN ammo is quite sufficient.
I would suggest you break you gun in with 230 gr RN as Kimber advices before going to 185 gr or any hollow point rounds.

A while ago wife and I were spending time at our friends house, which is where Georgia Arms is located anyway he was going to the car wash for ammo asked if I needed some, I said sure get me a couple hundred .45acp's. He brought back the Speer +P's said that was all they had, bought them because he wanted to shoot my CDP Ultra...I said well you are in for a surprise. That's why I'm shooting +P's.
