My first Kimber.

Just picked up my Custom II in 10mm. Surprised to find that the front frame strap is not checkered. Anyone have experience with the Wilson Combat - 1911 Checkered Front Strap? Do most owners change out the polymer MSH? Any other things a Kimber-newbie should know? Thanks.

Congratulations on your Custom II. I have changed a few MSHs but it wasn’t something necessary. I also have the WC front strap on my Range Officer and for the money it works just fine.

The Wilson Combat checkered frontstrap makes a great addition to any 1911, I have them on a couple of my guns.

I took a slightly different approach on my Kimber Stainless Target II in 9mm. It came with a uncheckered front strap, but had a steel MSH, but the checkering was not real good on it. I replaced the MSH with a smooth Smith & Alexander one piece MSH and magwell. Not everyone would like this, but I think the totally smooth front and backstrap is kind of unique.

Do the Wilson checkered front straps scratch the finish?

Congats on your purchase. You know sooner than later the "I can't leave well enough alone" bug will hit you. I know it does me every time I get something new. And yes the first thing I did was to change out the plastic MSH for a flat Stainless two piece mag-well type. Then I changed the sights for the TruGlo tritium/fiber-optics. Being left handed I put in a Ed Brown Polished Stainless ambi. thumb safety. I also put on a set of mag-well black buffalo horn grips.

I swapped in a steel MSH on my Pro Carry II, I just dislike the look and feel of plastic on a 1911.

Then I put skateboard tape on the front strap. Cut carefully, it looks OK, and works great.
