Extended Magwell

I ordered an extended bevelled magwell from Kimber and it will be in this week. Anybody have experience putting them on or would it be better to take it to a gunsmith?

99% of the time it's a simple job not requiring any fitting. Watch this video in our "Gunsmith" sub forum and decide for yourself.

Chuck43 that doesn't look so complicated. I think I'll pick up the punches and do it my self. Thanks for the info and video.

Hey Chuck,

What about at the end he says some magwell's may require fitting. And my 2nd question for this dumb newbie is will the original grips work with a magwell?

I'd love to have a magwell on my Aegis Ultra but don't want to screw up such a pretty little gun. Thank you,

Jim D

Mine went in on 2 of my Kimber with no need to alter anything. Just remember to put a rubber band around the grip safety before you pull the old one out.

I’ve put in several and they’re easy. Only one took any fitting. It was my Springfield that required a little fitting. I just had to take a hairs width off the rails of the mainspring housing with some fine sandpaper. It took 5 extra minutes.

It’s really not hard to do if you follow the video Chuck posted. If you have and problems put the original back in and go to a gunsmith.

Yes, use a rubber band to hold the grip safety engaged during the magwell installation. Absolutely crucial difference between “that was easy” and “now I’ve got to take it further apart to unjam before I can put it all back together”. Been there, done that, once...

I have done 4 myself. springfield 1911-A1, Remington R1 com., Kimber Stainless, and kimber Custom II. The first one is always the hardest. Learning curve, I believe what they call it. Be Sure to put the rubber band around the grip safety. Fatal flaw in the plan if you have to dissemble the whole thing. {don't ask} The Springfield fought me every step of the way. I changed the hammer, the grip safety, thumb safety, guide rod., springs. Yes I got the "Can't leave well enough alone bug" BTW I bought the most of the SS parts and the 2 piece SS mag-well from a guy who owns a machine shop locally and sells on E-bay. Klonimus great guy outstanding parts. I have used a lot of his parts on different build. As far as the mag-well, I didn't have to fit it. Just slide right in. The only piece I really had to "FIT" was the beaver tail grip safety. A good set of files and a lot of patience. Good Luck on your endeavor.
