Bluing Removal Question

Folks,

I have a Kimber Custom II .45 acp two tone. The slide has bluing. I would like to strip the bluing and have heard that soaking in white vinegar for 30-45 minutes, rensing, scrubbing with steel wool, and polishing is the way to go. Advice? I know the Custom II slide has an internal spring for the extractor and firing pin. Not sure if that internal spring would make this project ill advised. Any thoughts or guidance? I know bluing protects against corrosion. My question is more on the method of removal. I would appreciate any help!

Best,

Disassemble the slide prior to soaking it in vinegar (or Naval Jelly).

I would not remove the blueing unless you plan to have another finish applied. It will rust if you don’t. There is no internal spring for the extractor. There is a spring with the firing pin block under the rear sight.

How do you plan to refinish the slide you are stripping?

I was under the impression that the Customs were KimPro, not blued, which I gathered was more like Cerekote than bluing. Have I got that right?

The Custom II Two Tone has matte rounds with brush polished flats. The slide is blued with a stainless frame on the full size. The Pro and Ultra have aluminum frames with blued slides.

Ah. I somehow never noticed that the Custom II was not a Custom Shop, it was a II. Not quite as arbitrary as Harley model names, but still confusing for someone of my limited capacities...

So if I were to strip the bluing from the slide, would it then be just the same as the SS frame?
