Cougar Alert: Time to Carry

Front page of our local paper today: "Cougar a Threat".

We have bobcats, coyotes and cougars about here all the time, but we've got one adult male cougar here that's now considered a threat by both the Fish 'n Fur and police. The cat has killed a couple of pups, and yesterday a deer very close to houses near our river canyon.

Most of us here carry every day, but now even some who leave their guns at home are carrying. We had a woman hiker killed a few months ago by a cougar, so we're all on alert right now until the cat is put down. My 9mm CDP has been replaced with my .45 ACP version for now (stoked with 185gr Critical Defense).

It's been posted before, but here's my buddy John with a cat he killed close to town a while back. (Bogus time stamp)

There's all kind of predators about, both versions, but for now, we've got a four-legged one about that needs some attention before someone gets hurt. I keep a close eye on my girl hounds, Ruby and Lily when they're outside; my K-9 alarm system. Ah yes, life in the wild west.

Holy Cow Rick. I believe I would be carrying the .460 Rowland to stop one of those things.

You never know what your going to come across, We've got a few large cats roaming around my area. The officials deny that there are any around this area but I've seen tracks, pics, and I'm pretty sure I saw one by my barn one night.

It's interesting how everybody arms themselves when there is a known and eminent threat like the one you just described. And then tend to relax after the threat is dealt with. But they don't realize that the next threat is already out there and hasn't attacked yet. I think it's best to stay armed, giving thought to what you carry, as if a threat is always out there, which it is.
We live and a nice middle-class neighborhood where there is very little crime; an auto burglary maybe once in five years. However just 2 miles away is a little town called East Helena which is home to most of the burglars, drug dealers, assaults and robberies in this whole valley. I got some funny looks and comments from folks when I first talked about putting an alarm system on our house. Everybody installs one after they've been robbed. But you're way ahead if you are proactive.

According to Google, cougars are stealthy and generally stalk and hunt their victim attacking with very little warning. The thought of being able to quickly process the fact you are being attacked, draw and clear your holster, obtain a decent sight picture and hit a very agile, fast-moving animal is beyond most shooters. Cougars don't attack groups of people. If I were in cougar country by myself, I'd think about having a can of REI Counter Assault Bear Deterrent clipped to my belt and learn to "spray from the hip."

Make sure when you leave the bar walk to the parking lot with a friend, preferably a slow runner.
