First time Kimber advice?

Hello:
I have been a long gun man most of my life but Im preparing to purchase my first pistol. I am a big fan of the Kimber beauty and craftsmanship, as well as have enjoyed them at the range.

Im just wondering what yall recommend for a first time Kimber pistol buyer?

It is mainly for home protection, but also for some informal summer target shooting (not for CC).

Thank you in advance for your thoughts on the matter
David

Fullsize 1911. Proven, tested, classic, reliable, accurate, etc. Spending more then a grand is over the point of diminishing returns. Budget $800 and you'll get a Kimber you'll be proud of.

Welcome, David.

Your question is like asking someone to tell you what to eat for supper. What do you like? What do you not like?

Will you use it for target shooting, or home defense, or personal carry (you said no CC)? Do you like 9mm or .45 or .380? Lots of questions need to be answered before anyone can advise you on a first purchase.

I can tell you my personal preferences are the Super Carry HD models and the Raptor family. You may want to start there.... or not.

Welcome from Ohio. You have great advice from two members. But, ultimately it's up to you.

Welcome to Kimber Talk from beautiful downtown Monroe, Georgia!!

Well, David, you asked for a suggestion as to which Kimber pistol to start with. Since you gave no cost limitation, I won't beat around the bush. Besides, I'm spending YOUR money!! If I was to be starting out with a first Kimber pistol, I would have to spend YOUR money on a Stainless Pro Raptor II.

There you go, David. I suggested. What are you going to do with it? Did I spend your money wisely or what?

Welcome to the site. I think you will need to view the Kimber website and pick out a few models and we can go from there. No wrong choice, lot of different model features. For the needs you stated I feel you should consider the Pro (4" barrel) size along with the full size Kimber's. Answer these questions.
1. Do you want need laser grip? Night sights?
2. Do you like Stainless, Blue, or Two-Tone?
3. Steel frame or aluminum.

I will suggest the following groups in no particular order. Something from one of these groups may suit your current needs.

Gold Combat
Master Carry
Super Carry
Stainless Raptor

Check them out!

I also agree with Mr. Lineman's choice, Stainless Pro Raptor is one of the best looking and most popular Kimber's.

Hi David,
Like some have said it is hard to tell you what you like. You did say you have enjoyed them at your shooting range if a particular model you have handled stands out to you start there. Personally my favorite is the pro size 4" barrel. My first Kimber was CDP Pro. Take notice I said my first Kimber! I subsequently have purchased the Raptor II Full Size 5" Then my next purchase was another full size Eclipse in 10 mm. Bottom line it just doesn't matter which you buy you will most likely buy more than one when you catch what I call the addiction affliction of Kimber!

Welcome!
In addition to size you have to consider which caliber you want. If you are young and strong and recoil doesn't bother you then a 45 is great. If you are older and weaker like many folks here (sorry guys and gals) then maybe a 9MM with a milder recoil would suit you best. It sounds like you are just getting into handguns so I would suggest a 9MM due to lighter recoil for easier learning and cheaper (25-50%) ammunition. The only way to learn is to shoot, shoot, shoot, so unless money is not an issue, 9MM. Go to a store and feel the heft of a 4" gun and a 5" gun and see what feels better and then pick your caliber. As Montana Resident says, you can get in for under $1000. Don't get bogged down on sights they can be changed.

My opinion Only, Buy a model in full size .45 cal. Buy one with front and back strap etching. I own three Kimber, one custom carry II , One Super Carry Ultra Plus and one Solo STS. But as was stated earlier, don't kid yourself, it is just starting.
