Question Why are There Magazine Issues with 1911's?

I've already asked the question about the "variety" of brands of magazines to use with the Kimbers however, I am wondering why are they so fickle (from what I've been reading) when it comes to their magazines in general?

I've never heard any of this being issues with my polymers.

Just wondering.....

Anytime there is a problem with a 1911, gurus from all directions come out and blame the magazine. Sometimes they are right, often times not.

Some are built on the cheap. In my experience, with the one magazine that came with my Springer more then 20 years ago, they last a long long looooong time. IF there is a problem, take it apart and clean it, and it's good to go another 15 to 20 years.

Good point MR.

I was just curious cause I've been hearing that argument (magazine issues) a whole lot in reference to the 1911's.

I think some of the problems that can be experienced with 1911 magazine is inertial feed. Prior to jumping into the 1911 world I had never heard of inertial feed problems. Perhaps it has something to do with the girth and weight of the round that makes proper magazine lip manufacture so critical. IDK.

If Mike240 reads this thread I'm sure he can shed some light on the issue.

Interesting article. Judge for yourself.

1911 Reliability Secrets

This video only touches on some points that I'd like to know much more about.

He points out the sharp edges on the feed ramp and explains that they need smoothed out/tapered. I just got mine back from the gunsmith and he made some pretty significant changes (smoothed all edges and lowered the bottom edge) and it's amazing how smooth it feeds now. So why wouldn't this be part of the manufacturing process if it's a known common reliability issue?!

Hey Gary, thanks for that excellent link by the way. I pulled my gun apart and examined each area he mentioned in the article. Pretty thorough read on reliability.
