Uniformed Employee of the U.S. Government

A uniformed employee of the U.S. Government drove up to my house today.

He came up to the door.

Knocked.

Handed me a package.

And left as quickly as he arrived in his little clown car.

Lookie what I got!
8000 grit speckled Ume stone
Nanocloth
1 μ cubic boron nitride emulsion

Most are frightened by the sharpness of my knives.

I'm sure you know the story: You warn 'em, they say yeah, and the next time you see 'em you get the story of how the red stuff was leaking out.

Got to play with the new toys this afternoon. Two knives, both were brought to 8000 grit on stones, and then finished with 1μ CBN.

First was a Benchmade Adamas, D2 steel, 25 degrees. Under 60x magnification, there are no distinct scratches that go the entire width of the bevel. The edge is good enough were with even a light touch, it will start grabbing fingerprints. Pretty nice.

The other blade is a Chinese Ganzo made of 440C. Because of the shape of the blade, I can't tell you the angle of the bevel. Less than 20, I'd guess. There are a few scratches across the bevel, but that could have been my technique, which varied a little from the Benchmade knife, or it could be the way the 440C handles. No need to fix it now, as the blade is sharp. If you have tiny skin flaps on your fingers from working on things, this knife will shave them off. No, I'm not a cutter like Angelina Jolie. But when your knife is sharp, you need to see how delicate of work you can do with it. I don't recommend this, however.

Anyway, this nicer equipment has improved my work. Also, I'm getting better at maintaining equal bevels, changing them the way I want, and "seeing" flaws in my work.

Tomorrow I might play with a kitchen knife or two. Mrs. Iron has become spoiled, and now demands sharp knives in the kitchen at all times. After whipping some CBN on the knives, I'm afraid she might get even worse.

What's odd is that in my mind, these are the epitome of sharpness. But... but... what would 0.5μ or 0.25μ be like. Maybe I'll reach the point where I can just wave the knife over my steak and it will slice in two... like Moses waving his staff over the Red Sea.
