Going to give it a shot

I've never really tried to sharpen a knife, I have a large number of good knives and I've always been afraid of ruining them so when they'd get dull I'd just buy another knife. I've been watching youtube videos and reading about sharpening and decided enough is enough. Today I'm heading for Walmart to buy some cheap knives to practice on and a box of band-aids.

...oh, this ought to be rich...

Ya' know, the forum might find it fun if you took two knives of similar vintage and destruction and sent me one of them.

You could then do a "DIY showcase."

Edit: I have to know, what started this immersion into polishing? You'll be like most people who want to do a good job. You'll buy some cheap stones, hate them and wind up calling Ken Schwartz anyway. Then you'll complain to me in the forum that your first invoice from Ken had more zeroes on it than the title of your first car.

I also know that you'll proudly show off your first polished knife--which you hold in one hand replete with six bandages...

Right, and after doing that I could challenge Rob Leatham to a shooting contest.

Hey, I'm still mad about that!

He shaved me by only four points--with a race gun. I had a three-inch, box-stock Kimber.

And he won't give me "double or nuttin."

Good luck! What sharpening system are you going to use?

Kife sharpening by hand can be relaxing and an enjoyable. But if it's just about not tossing away dull knives then this will work very well. This is mine and I use on all our everyday knives. I don't use it on the below Buck anymore because Chico did a wonderful job of polishing it, but it's standard use for everything else.

You're right, but what we do here is not really what real-deal Japanese togishi polishing is about.

For example, let's suppose that the KimberTalk forum had never met any of the polishers I know. However, one of the members had to repair/refurbish a very important knife--like one that belonged to his grandfather.

Any of these guys (me included) would take Ken's stones and nanodiamond slurry and do their best work.

You'd ask for the invoice, and they would say, "That will be one hundred dollars per inch..."

(BTW, Rob Babcock does high end kitchen knives like the Hattori--and I would give him the money!)

Chuck's idea for the Knives Forum was to showcase knives you might never have seen, offer tools you might want/need and encourage DIY projects. To do that, I have to buff up your knives and return them to you so you decide if you wanted to learn the craft.

That, and I hate guys who go to family reunions with their brand new real estate licenses. This is a hobby forum, hopefully a cadre' of friends.

I just called Ken and told him Chuck was going to "take the veil."

There was a pregnant pause, and then Ken cut in, "Chico, I have to call my Lamborghini rep and buy a new car..."

All I said was that Chuck might want some Japanese stones!
