Just got a new knife from Joyce!

I was on the phone with Joyce, when the doorbell rang--I could see the brown uniform, and I had heard my grandmother's tales of The Reichstag...

But I worried for nothing, it was just the UPS guy!

I could see the North Carolina zip code, and I knew my Protech/Emerson had come! I told the UPS guy I was on the phone with the woman who had sent it, and he just shook his head. He'd delivered to me before.

Anyway, as we spoke and joked, I took out the folder, hit the activation button, and the knife snapped my hand like a errant muskrat trap! Yikes, what power!

And true to an Emerson, the alloy was 154-CM. Low chromium, higher vanadium, and I might live to see it go dull, but I doubt it.

I made sure I thanked Joyce, and for some reason I kept the box. But who am I kidding! That switchblade might die of old age in my jeans, but it's never going back in the box!

In the package was also a "very troubled knife" from Joyce.

Well, both sides of the bevel are now even. But a lot of work needs to be done. I do have another knife from another client. I like having two knives, I can let the ink dry on one knife as I sharpen the other!

Thanks, guys.

I wanted this knife, because in a very real sense, "it's just a knife." Let me explain.

Obviously, a knife should take a good edge, but also resist damage because it's also a 'tool." The blade shape, be it their drop point or tanto, can carve through anything (or anyone) I need sliced.

The handle is T-6 aluminum, the same alloy most military planes use for the "ribs" of their fuselages.

It's a good balance. It won't break, it won't chip, you can swim in it if you have to, and it doesn't have spikes nor is it festooned with weird designs like a dirk in a Stallone movie.

It will lay against the seam of your jeans, out of the way and hardly a burden. Then it appears in your hand, and somehow does it all.

I like this knife design.

I know what you're thinkin' and I don't blame you. I said I was not going to polish my new knife--and I didn't.

I did play with it a bit, clicked it a few times, put a dab of Joyce's "Quick Release" on the activation button and pretty much called it a night.

Then morning came, and I looked at the edge with the dogged resolve of a polisher. Yikes, the guy who sharpened this must be blind! Certainly Ernie didn't do this!

So, I took out just two stones, a 140 shaper and 600 roughing stone. I used the shaper to make the edges uniform, and then took the deep scratch pattern out with the 600 going north and south.

To get out the scratch pattern of the 600, I cleaned it, but this time went east and west. I actually got a toothy yet subtle sheen.

And I feel better. This edge can be replicated inside of ten minutes, probably less since the edge is now uniform. But my needs are the same, I want a knife for all circumstances. At least now that knife will cut!

Joyce's "Quick Release" made me think bad things and then laugh.

The knife is a beauty!

Bigdog, I believe the phrase you're searching for is actually "sweet release."

Chico-
Good looking blade. I have seen you mention Joyce numerous times, does she have a website? I may have to copy you on that one. I would like something smaller than my 9051 Bechmade and that looks like it might fit the bill.

Yes, her and her husband Nick own "Horizon Bladeworks."

You can reach her at: 828-884-4302

I admire hard work and delivering what the client ordered. Trust me, I'm polishing like a chrome junkie today.

I also admire honest people.

If Joyce says you'll have your knife in two days, set your stopwatch, your knife is just 47:59 away.

I was on the phone with her when that Protech/Emerson was delivered by UPS, two hours early.
