Getting Ready for the Week

I suspect we all carry a pocket knife of some kind as we go about our day. If you're like me, you have a few that you rotate week to week.

Well, this is the one that is heading out with me this week. I pulled it out yesterday and was not pleased with the condition of the edge. Since it was a heat index of 100 yesterday, I spent some time working the edge back to where I prefer. Truth be told, this only took me about 45 minutes to do, as the bevel had been set to my preference on a prior day.

This is fairly straight-forward process.
- Mark the edge to set/validate the angle.
- Start with 600g Diamond plate on the KME, changing sides regularly until there is a nice burr, tip to heal
- Stone progression, repeating above, 600, 1500, 3000, 8000, 15k, 20k
- Strop - Kangaroo hide on aluminum, with 100k and 200k jewelers paste

Result is that the edge, set at 21.5 deg, will be rock solid on this CTS-204P steel against most of the things I ask of it this week.

What's in your pocket for the week.

My Buck 505 was sharpened by a former KT member. He did a fine job. I'd recommend him but he ran off with his KT member donated desktop computer to somewhere else in cyberspace.

Very nice work, and I like your selection of reflective background. So what kind of 15k and 20k stones are you using? And what's up with "jeweler's rouge?" Do you like it? I'm using diamonds up to 100k, but haven't tried anything finer.

My Barge was skillfully sharpened and polished by the same fine craftsman that took his donated computer and ran home.
My sincere hope is that he might reflect upon some of his last posts and rejoin this fine community in the near future.

That member did indeed perform fine knife work but I don't think there is enough medication or reflection of thoughts in the world to keep him "right."

Rusty,

I called Ken Schwartz and go the Suehiro 10K, 15K and 20K to fit my sharpening rig. Strangle, on amazon I have also found an interesting variety of natural stoned sold by Jende Industries that are interesting to use. I found the jewelers paste in 100K & 200K on amazon in small tubes. I cut small pieces of Poplar to fit my rig and glued on some old saddle leather I have. Loaded on the paste and it works great.

I clearly missed whatever transpired with Chico, but hope he find his way back.

Maybe we can find a way to do the same for "The Tourist".
I will bet a dollar to a donut that he is still ghosting the form. So send him a PM and even if his computer is off it should send an email to his phone.

I use my Barge almost everyday at work and at home, Chico did a great job on the edge. I have to send it back to him soon to fix up the edge, I beat the crap out of it at work.
