Before and After

While sitting here pondering, I put my Manix 2 under a little microscope. I was the geeky microscope kid, and I haven't changed in half a century. I was amused how a seemingly sharp knife could look like a serrated bread knife that was polished on a bench grinder. Then it occurred to me to put my iPhone to the objective lens. Check out the first attachment.

Of course a serrated knife polished on a bench grinder can never make me happy, so broke out the stones and touched up the edge a little bit. Check out the second attachment. Both pics are at 120x magnification.

Hey, Rick. The quality of my sharpening increased immensely once I started "looking" at the edges.

Before, I would do a knife and think it was good. Then I'd look at it under magnification, only to discover that I had "missed" sections.

The best bang for your buck is the "KingMas 60x Currency Detecting Microscope." Get it from Amazon Prime for seven bucks. Don't order from those shifty Communist Chinese, even if it's cheaper. They'll steal your money.

The Kingmas is cheap, but it provides a good image. 60x is right in the ballpark for seeing the detail you need. The 120x images that I created are overkill Also, the KingMas image moves in the direction that you move the magnifier. Others move in the opposite direction, so it's really hard to look along the entire length of the blade.

Seven bucks for more precise edges.

P.S.
As someone who uses the Spyderco sharpener, do you also carry Spydies? They're weird looking knives, but I carry one daily.

Rusty,

Your last post answered by question once I saw the initial photo's. Which Scope? I have been considering a digital scope and it looks like this does a pretty good job.

Thanks for the info on which scope you use. I was just about to ask that question so I could order one !!

Now, how do you take the pics ? Just place your iphone up to the eyepiece ?

The pictures were shot with another magnifier. It's something I picked up from chefknivestogo. That magnifier goes to 120x, but you get a backwards image. It's better for taking pics, but not for looking at knife edges. But yeah, I just put the iPhone lens up to the magnifier lens.
