Range report

Range Report...

Took a new shooter to the range today. He has a S&W .38 (don't remember model.) After some pre-range discussion about safety, operation, and site picture we headed to Governor's Gun Club. He shot most of a box, but didn't care to shoot any more ( ) He did pretty well at 5 yards in single action mode.

Then my Kimber Custom Crimson Carry II came out. I put a few down range at 10 yards. Asked him if he'd like to try, but he declined. Oh well. I continued to put 100 flawless rounds down range. All but one were in the 9 ring or better. The bullseye area was gone but I continued, easing toward the edge to make the hole bigger. Lawdy, lawdy, I love shooting that gun. So smooth and fits perfectly in my hands. So, now she has 450 rounds down the pipe. Was going to shoot another 100 but my guest looked bored.

The club had just received three Compact Carry models. They are pretty but I don't like the way the butt of the grip hits the heel of my palm. Just didn't feel comfortable. They had a Stainless Gold Combat ($2K) in the case. Oh, my did that thing feel wonderful. Oooooooo (slight shiver up my spine) They had several other models too, but I was already ruined. I did fondle an Ultra. It felt surprisingly nice in my hand. Acquisition of site picture seemed automatic. Really nice, but I don't think I'd buy an Ultra unless I had the chance to shoot a box first to see how the recoil felt.

They had also just gotten in three Kimber rifles, an 84L in .30-06, a 84M in .308 and a Tactical in .308. Lightest rifles I've ever held. Bolts looked like Mauser actions but smaller. They are pricey. The Tactical, with adjustable cheek weld and bi-pod was $2,500. The scope was a Vortex at $875, the scope rings for the 30mm tube were $130. Ouch.

I put my name and info on a list for when the Pro Raptor and/or Pro Eclipse came in. They are asking $1,100 for them. Now I'm like, please don't call me and force me to make a decision to buy or not buy.

All in all, it was an enjoyable day at the range.

Oh, almost forgot. They had AmeriGlo night sites. I'm not familiar with them, but it had Trijicon stamped on the ramp. Anyone familiar with them?
Green on green or green rear and amber front? Which would you choose?

That's what I was wondering about Gator's friend. I've got a S&W 442 that hurts to shoot. It's one of those carry a lot shoot a little type guns.

No, it was more of a medium frame, stainless. I've owned several S&W, but I neglected to look at the model number. It wasn't a full frame, but wasn't a pocket gun either. Recoil control didn't seem to be a problem for him.

I did not tell you earlier that he's in his late 70's.

Well there's your answer, if it was around noon time he was probably missing his pre-nap nap.

Ok, I was curious as to why he didn't want to shoot much. People over seventy are like that.

He's thinking he want to conceal carry and have home defense. I told him he should get a shotgun for home defense. They have an active alarm system, so all they would have to do when the alarm went off is hide on the far side of the bed with shotgun aimed at doorway. I was quite insistent that IF he was determined to carry, he needed LOTS of practice.

He may go home, think about it, and change is mind about CCW. (I hope) He has two knee replacements and can't bend his legs more than about 40 degrees, so his mobility is very limited.

But I had fun!
