It was a great day at the range. I am a happy man.

It was a great day at the range. I am a happy man.

Took my 13 and 12 year old grandsons (and their father) to the range today. The 13 yo has been to the range once. The 12 yo, it was his first time.

After about 30 minutes of guns safety (and quiz on rules 1 thru 4) and range behavior, we had an overview of the two .22 pistols we were bringing today. One is a Ruger single 6, I call the cowboy gun since I have the whole rig for it, and the Ruger Mark II target pistol.

From 7 yards the boys did very well for their first outing. We were shooting 5-spot bulls (4" black with 1" red bull) They both did very well keeping them in the black most of the time. I was very happy, and so were they.

Then I broke out Kim and her .45s. I shot 5 rounds at 10 yards, three in the black and two in the red. I even impressed myself. The boys were all "Wow" so I enjoyed that part.

So I ask, "Y'all want to shoot the big gun?" Their eyes got big and they replied with a hearty, "Yes, sir." So I moved the target up to 5 yards just to keep it on paper.

First up was the 12 year old. I reviewed operations and grip and allowed him to dry fire a few times to learn the trigger. Then I put one round in the magazine and made the gun hot with the safety on. He took Kim firmly in his hands, adjusted his grip, released the safety and took aim. *BOOM* center dead on bullseye! OMG, I couldn't believe it. We both had HUGE smiles across our face.

Next was the 13 yo. Went through the same procedure. He settled in and *BOOM* and nice 6 o'clock on the black. I need to work with him some more on not pulling his shots down as the next 5 were grouped nicely but just under the 4" black.

Then my SIL had the 12 yo come to the next bay to shoot the G27 .40. After proper review of operations, he settled in, took aim and *BOOM* another first shot bullseye! I think we have a natural in the family.

What a wonderful day with my two oldest grandsons and their father. I am blessed.

That's an awesome day Gary!!!! My son is 12 and, fortunately, we shoot quite a bit together. Its a great feeling when young kids respect the sport, enjoy it, have good mentors, and are eager to learn.

I'm sure you are proud and cant wait to do it again. Congrats on your great day!!

Awesome. No grandchildren here but love taking my kids. Young eyes and arms do amazing things.

Family

My wife has started to go with me more often, and my 10 year old is chomping at the bit to go! I am going to try to get to the range with her this weekend, and let her plink away with a .22 for a bit.

Sounds like a fantastic time was had, and a safe one too!

Sounds like you had a wonderful day Gator. At the age of 50 I don't have any grand kids to share the same stories with but who knows...maybe someday...
