Did you notice that most of them were shooting their wheel-guns single action? Were the police taught to shoot single action? They certainly didn't seem to shoot that way on the old TV shows ...

Shooting a revolver single action is much more accurate, you have a much lighter trigger pull once the gun is already cocked unless your name is Jerry Miculek.

TV cops/cowboys have access to very special guns and ammunition not available to the general public. One of the most popular cowboy revolvers is the endless ammunition single action colt, it's been know to fire over 50 times without needing reloading. Just imagine what the world would be like if street gangs were able to get their hands on those guns.
