The Black Hole

Hopefully this helps other folks with a similar situation. I've been working on a home project for over a month now and getting near completion. No, I haven't launched my own Hubble Telescope, but I do have a Black Hole problem. Or at least had.

Few years ago, I got tired of our 18' round above ground pool. No more kids around, wife never wanted to use it. It was just me and the dog. So rather than continuing dumping money into it every year, I tore it down. This left us with the towns biggest cat litter box. We had a special liner under it which kept rocks and junk that may pierce the liner. This what we were left with. (I built a bridge to the pool from our deck. So thats what I'm taking shots from)...

That Black Hole plagued us for 3 years. I got tired of looking at it.

....to be continued.

The Black Hole

.....so I kept thinking for a month of what to do. Do I just back fill it and plant grass? Do I build a ground level patio?

My house has been in the family for decades. It's pre-1940.... Last owners were my grand parents. I took it over in the mid '80's.
When I was a kid, my grandmother had a beautiful garden where the pool was. We had ducks, rabbits, you name it. It got me thinking. Maybe a Zen Garden for my wife.
Then eureka! Lets do it! I found out after the fact that I'm not young anymore. I've always been like a non-stop train. Still am and found out I would pay dearly. I cannot do what I use to do. But I had no idea because I have not started any big projects in many years. It took this project to teach me a lesson.

I had 4 tons of wall stone delivered. I was determined to build a wall. (No, not like Trump).... but a 2-3 tiered 18' round circled wall.

.... to be continued.

What really sucked is they could not get the off loader close to the hole. So I had to haul a few stones at a time, level and lay them. Then go rest. They averaged 65lbs a piece.
This is what took me so long. It almost killed me. I have a fooked up skeletal system as is. I ended up aggravating the arthritis in my hands, induced CTS and Tendinitis. How's that for a triple threat injury? (BTW, I left that liner and built over it. Figured what the hell. Super strong weed barrier).
There were times for days that I could barely pick up a pencil. But just endured the pain because I wanted to do this for my wife.
She's so easy going on me with my gun hobby. She never asks me for anything.

Things started coming together. Built a 3 tiered raised garden. Called a French Versailles Sunburst.

Ran electric out to the falls and ran a drip line irrigation system to all levels. Added a self contained water fall feature.

....to be continued.

Forgot to mention. Many many bags of raised garden soil. May not sound like a lot but I needed to be at least 18" high of soil at the center and the whole garden was 8' tip to tip.

After my wife picked out all the flowers, I started getting ready to add many pounds of pea gravel. I did originally want just a pea gravel Zen Garden. But I tend to get carried away. Wife loves cherubs and angels. What better way to have the garden looked after.

....still more.

I'm not crazy about fire but I wanted Tiki Torches. I also had no desire to light them every night. I stumbled onto Solar Realistic Torches. Completely animated. Also added a propane fed small fire pit. Gives off quite a bit of heat.

....story almost at the end.

I also wanted to dedicate this garden to my grandma for without, never had my house and had the love of her garden. I guess you can say, this is an upgraded version of her round flower rock garden.
Also dedicated to my wife's mom. Long gone, she was always a lover of flowers and gardening.
And finally to ourselves. We put up 3 step stones. All depicted love and something for us. Ours being one of my fav lil stories, Footprints in the Sand.

And 2 others with beautiful sayings for my wife's mom and my grandma.

..... I hope my lil project finds you a way to get rid of your black hole. Or even just a nice garden project.
I still have some minor yard stuff to do and have to get some updated shots. Also going to build a few smaller raised gardens for flowers and veggies.

Just one last gift to both of us. A 30,000 btu firepit for our deck.

.....:::: The End ::::... I think.
Now just let my body heal. This killed me.
I'm one big time hurting puppy!
