Remembering D-Day

It was 73 years ago today that young boys became men and many of those men didn't make it back home to their families because they sacrificed their lives in the name of freedom.

A toast to the "greatest generation" of men and women that our country has ever known.

Everybody should read The Longest Day by Cornelius Ryan. One of many, and IMO, maybe the best WWII novel. The struggle, the pain, planning and insanity of war skillfully written like no other.

My father landed at Normandy, but before that, he flew over the area to drop propaganda leaflets to the locals. He then took that C-47 back to England to get on a landing craft. Can't believe he survived that invasion given some of the stories he told only to his fellow GI's (and to me if I was present). Then there was the Battle of the Bulge and....

Agree with DaveinNC...they are truly hereos!

Real MEN! True HERO'S! Thank you for our FREEDOM!

I don't think my Dad was in Germany but his brother, my Uncle Thurman went in D-Day Plus Nine days, was awarded 9 Bronze Stars, made it home safe.

My Uncle Frank interviewed remembering D-Day in 2007 when he returned to visit the sight where he landed.

Exclamation Daddy's D-Day!

My father signed up with the U.S. Army Air Corps two days after Pearl Harbor. He was in the 8th Air Force, 91st Bomb Group stationed in Bassingbourn‎, England during the war in Europe. Prior to, during and after the D-Day invasion, he flew numerous sorties in a B-17 to bomb the rear areas, troop concentrations and transportation centers to delay and prevent German troops and armor from reinforcing the German forces opposing the landings.

While he did not participate in the actual landings, he sure made it a bit easier on those who did. He flew his 25 missions, returned home and then trained other young Americans to fly the B-17 Flying Fortress.

Thanks, Daddy!!
