Why You Need To Shoot With Your Non-Dominant Hand

A couple of weeks ago one of our members fell off of his roof while installing Christmas lights making him a one handed shooter for awhile. I wondered then how many of us practice shooting one handed or even the opposite hand if you're a lefty/righty ??

I'll admit that I shoot with my right hand quite often, but rarely do it while using my left.

Let’s go one step further: cross draw with non-dominant arm.

Most concealed carriers draw from the waistband, dominant side. They bring the gun’s sights up to eye-level, align, and shoot.

If your dominant arm is down — unless you pick up an opposite-side holster — you’re going to be stuck in cross-draw.

Is that something you’ve practiced?

Every range visit. You never know when your dominant hand will become disabled and you're still in a firefight. Also, practice reloading one-handed. 👍

At least 50 rounds every trip to the range. Being right eye dominant I find myself shooting almost gangsta style. Hey, it works for me.

I took my two edc guns out and was doing some dry firing with my left hand and with practice I'm sure I could get by shooting it if I had to do it. What would be the challenge is both of them only have the mag release on the left side and only one has a ambi safety.

I can't imagine trying to drop an empty mag, reload one and then rack the slide with just one hand much less my non dominant one.

I think I should qualify my post. When I shoot left handed I am practicing as if my right hand is incapacitated. Hence the gansta angle of my firearm.

Well let me tell ya... it sucks! With my “friends” injury, I had... I mean he had, a hard time racking the slide. I do carry in condition 1, so there are 7 avail. Cross draw is not working well with the sling on. Sticky holster works really well but need more practice with left hand draw. Marshall mentioned using my revolver, I like it, fits well in my pocket too, even thought about putting my Barami grips back on for temporary BUT in my state, you can only carry what’s on your permit, I do not have a revolver on it, I might need to change that. I am dry fire champion in my living room as long as my son is here to keep racking for me

A good thread Marshall .... I often shoot strong hand only, "Bullseye style". I shot some NRA Bullseye Matches back in the day and found this a fun interesting way to test myself.

I will often add in some "weak hand" drills as well. Again I used to shoot some IPSC matches where weak hand shooting was called for. I've spent many hours and rounds practicing for these drills and can still draw on the muscle memory today. I should practice more weak hand drawing for EDC.

As a kid I learned to shoot rifles and shotguns off either shoulder ...lots of hills here ...easier to switch hands than to turn around ...think about it....
