What the hell is wrong with the justice system in this country? 2 boys sexually assault a girl and broadcast it live on Facebook for the world to see and they get off with probation? Maybe if they started treating these kids like the criminals they are they might start seeing a cut back in the crime rate in Chicago. Lesson learned do the crime and serve no time. The judge that heard this
case should be jailed.
Boys given 5 years probation for sex assault of girl broadcast live on Facebook
A Cook County judge sentenced two teenage boys Wednesday to five years of probation and ordered them to register as sex offenders for the sexual assault of a 15-year-old girl broadcast live on Facebook last March.
Judge Patricia Mendoza, assigned to the juvenile division, had signaled she would impose the probation sentences when the two pleaded guilty in November to a single count of child pornography.
As the victim, now 16, and her mother looked on from the rear of the courtroom, a prosecutor read the girl’s victim-impact statement in which she said the sexual assault “has very traumatically altered my life.”
The teen said she lost longtime friends, with some even sending her threats through social media.
“The worst part of this is being able to Google my name and seeing everything that happened to me,” she wrote.
After the assault, the victim’s mother had told the Tribune that people harassed the girl’s family, making threats. She said the taunts had been just as bad online, including people laughing at her daughter, the mother said then.
Prosecutors had sought sentences for both boys, now each 15, in prison facilities for juveniles.
In court Wednesday, the judge noted the serious nature of the crime and its impact on the victim but said a potential lifetime as registered sex offenders would have more repercussions for the teens than spending several more months in confinement.
“It’s time for you gentlemen to start adjusting to your new life,” Mendoza told them.
Both had spent four months in custody before being released on electronic monitors.
As registered sex offenders, the two will have to follow all necessary treatment recommendations and must register even if they move outside Cook County.
Both, however, can petition the court to be taken off the sex offender registry after 10 years. Attorneys for both teens said their clients were remorseful for their roles in the gang rape.
Shortly before the judge imposed sentence, both teens made brief apologies in open court.
“I’m sorry for what I did and I will never do it again,” one said.
One of the boys attended the hearing with only his older brother and godmother because both his mother and grandmother were hospitalized.
Following the hearing, the victim and her mother were escorted from the courtroom by deputies and couldn’t be reached for comment.
The judge also ordered the end of electronic monitoring for both boys, but a restraining order still bars them from contacting the victim.
Additional charges faced by the two — including aggravated criminal sexual assault and the manufacture of child pornography — were dropped when they pleaded guilty in November as part of an agreement with prosecutors.
The Facebook Live sex assault sent shock waves through the victim's West Side neighborhood. The girl, a high school freshman, went missing March 19 after she was dropped off at her Lawndale home by her uncle, according to her family. The next day, her family became aware of the video and took screenshots to the Ogden District police station, where the mother ran into police Superintendent Eddie Johnson.
At the time of the assault, authorities said as many as six males assaulted the victim. By April, the two teens were charged with the sexual assault.
Then in October, a third boy, also 15, was also charged. That case is still pending.
