The Original U.S. Mardi Gras

As should be apparent from my nom de guerre, I love Mardi Gras. I'm fortunate to live in the birthplace of Mardi Gras in the United States, Mobile, Al. The French brought it to "New France" in 1699 and had an official celebration in their new capitol city, Fort Louis de La Louisiane (la Mobile).
I am posting a link explaining the history of Mardi Gras in the US, how it got to New Orleans and took off, and is celebrated in many cities across our country.
I'll also throw in some other Mardi Gras links including the organization of which I am a member (I created and administer the FB site, so be kind).
Please feel free to share your Mardi Gras experiences (keep it PG) here. We'll see if we can keep it going until Feb 12th, Mardi Gras Day.
Wikipedia does a good job to start: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mardi_...obile,_Alabama

Shadow Barons

This is the Facebook Page for the Shadow Barons in Daphne, AL (Eastern Shore of Mobile Bay). I started it to promote our parade. We aren't saints, but the parade is more "family friendly". Stop by and give it a "like".

Thanks for the info Masquer8er !
Looking forward to reading all the history. I was not aware that MG originated in Mobile. Growing up in Louisiana, I've enjoyed celebrating Marci Gras all along the gulf coast and most often in NOLA. We've been members of the Krewe of Cork for many years but could not make it to our parade which is tomorrow. We will however be in the FQ next Sunday through MG day.

Krewe of Cork looks to be fun. Fine food, fine drink and Mardi Gras, 3 of my favorite things. I know you'll have fun in the Quarter, too!!!

Do they really toss MoonPie's to the crowd?

Moonpie's are made at the Chattanooga Bakery right here in downtown Chattanooga Tennessee.

...I spent a few Fat Tuesdays in Mobile. most of the memories are a little blurry :-) ...a bar that was called "the Garage" was involved :-)
...on that note isn't Fat Tuesday the 13th this year?
...on a related note (Mobile trivia) I was told the term "jubilee" was coined in Mobile? I guess in the summer sometimes the O2 levels can drop and leave the fish in Mobile Bay moving a little slow. When the tide is low you can walk out and pick them up! That's a "jubilee", or at least how it was told to me by a little old blue haired lady years ago :-)
