Georgia on my Mind

Georgia Lieutenant Governor threatens Delta after it cuts ties with NRA...

Georgia Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle (R) said Monday he would block any tax legislation that benefits Delta Airlines after the company ended its discount program for National Rifle Association (NRA) members.

I will kill any tax legislation that benefits @Delta unless the company changes its position and fully reinstates its relationship with @NRA. Corporations cannot attack conservatives and expect us not to fight back, Cagle tweeted.

Delta, which is headquartered in Atlanta, is reportedly seeking state approval to restore a sizable fuel tax break that expired several years ago.

Is it ethical for an elected official to offer tax incentives/punishments depending on a company's stance on political and social issues?

Yes it is. We had this last year in Wisconsin.

As you know, switchblades were "illegal." Actually, it wasn't the knives themselves, it was the fact that the 1958 law made it illegal for a person to transport an automatic knife across a state line for use or sale.

Governor Walker redacted the Wisconsin law. Ergo, there is a tax on just about everything here except some food items. So while anyone smuggling an automatic knife into Wisconsin never paid a cent in taxes, the law still stood.

Walker's signature negated a law and with it any revenue from the sale in the form of a tax, and probably set a precedent.

(Edit: To my knowledge there are no switchblade factories in Wisconsin. If you buy one here you pay a Wisconsin sales tax, but no revenue as defined in the 1958 law).

That was fast :-)

...Governor Nathan Deal signed the bill today. No more tax exemptions for jet fuel, it's estimated it will cost Delta about 40 million this year.

It seems anything goes these days. If nobody complains they just keep it rolling I guess.
